TL;DR: The Commanders are in Ashburn, Virginia for training camp. Quarterback Jayden Daniels looks sharp after an injury-plagued 2025. Rookie linebacker Sonny Styles is turning heads. There’s a kicking competition, some injuries to monitor, and the team might add another receiver.
Think of training camp like pre-season practice on steroids. All 32 NFL teams gather in late July/early August to:
The Commanders’ camp runs until the first preseason game week (starting August 13). Reporter John Keim is on the ground daily. Here’s the day-by-day breakdown.
Jayden Daniels (starting QB) continued his strong camp:
Marcus Mariota (backup QB) also had a great day, especially in the red zone:
Why this matters: Daniels missed most of 2025 with injuries. Seeing him sharp, mobile, and in command is the #1 good news story for Washington.
Running back Rachaad White (Daniels’ college teammate at Arizona State) had high praise:
"He’s the best quarterback I played with… the way he moves, the poise. I’ve seen him come through in the clutch so many times."
Other notes:
Daniels (NFC Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2024) looked crisp all day:
| Play | Details |
|---|---|
| Deep out to Terry McLaurin | Thrown in rhythm, beautiful completion |
| Scramble right → throw back middle to Ben Sinnott (TE) | Kept eyes downfield, didn’t force it into danger |
| Post route to Jaylin Lane | Perfect ball; Lane leapt early and dropped it (not on Daniels) |
| Down the seam to Luke McCaffrey | Threaded it between corner & safety — "tight window" throw |
TE Chig Okonkwo summed it up: "You just gotta be where you’re supposed to be and he’ll find you with the accurate ball."
Kicker Battle Update:
Injury/Rest Notes:
First day in full pads. First play from scrimmage: Sonny Styles (1st-round rookie LB) stuffed Jacory Croskey-Merritt in the hole. No live tackling, but the pop was real.
Styles’ early camp resume:
Other Monday highlights:
Injury Watch:
John Bates (TE, elite blocker) — strained hamstring, out "a couple weeks"
Nick Allegretti (projected starting C) — strained calf, out "a week or so"
Good news: Treylon Burks (WR) returned from foot issue
Kicker Drill (Late-Game Simulation):
Ben Sinnott (TE): Mixed day — 2 drops (one on a perfect Daniels dime), but multiple catches
Daniels’ checkdown game: Elite. Gets through progressions fast so RBs (like Croskey-Merritt) have room to run after the catch.
Styles again: Broke up a zone pass with long arms; would’ve delivered a big hit if live.
Chig Okonkwo (new signing) lines up everywhere — outside, slot, inline. Terry McLaurin: "He runs routes like a big receiver."
Ben Sinnott (2024 2nd-rounder): "It’s not even close [to previous years]. So many variations. We’re lining up at #1 receiver, running 5-step ins, corners, options, flats. It’s a breath of fresh air."
All TEs running a much wider route tree than 2023–24.
Other notes:
Coach Dan Quinn opened with red-zone team drills + 2-point conversions — "Those are the moments I want."
Red zone context:
Daniels mixed bag: Perfect corner TD to Treylon Burks, high grab over middle by Burks, but nearly picked by Mike Sainristil in tight coverage.
Daniels on the intensity: "It gets the juices flowing, it gets guys ready."
Other observations:
Washington wants another WR. Brandon Aiyuk (49ers) has been linked — played with Daniels at Arizona State, publicly wants to join.
But: Aiyuk’s recent social media activity has multiple team sources saying Washington may lose interest if/when he’s released.
GM Adam Peters on social media factor: "We look at everything… tape, locker room reputation. It’s not usually a huge part. Usually."
Alternative: Stefon Diggs (free agent) — led Patriots with 85 catches, 1,013 yards in 2025. Drawing multi-team interest.
Other notes:
| Position | Contenders | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Placekicker | Jake Moody vs. Drew Stevens | Stevens winning early (accuracy from distance) |
| Center | Nick Allegretti vs. Julian Good-Jones | Allegretti hurt; Coleman/Cooper cross-training |
| Left Guard | Brandon Coleman vs. Chris Paul | Coleman getting C reps too = versatility edge |
| WR5/WR6 | Dyami Brown, Treylon Burks, Jaylin Lane, Luke McCaffrey, Jaden Bradley, Jacoby Jones | Deep group; special teams will decide |
| Backup QB | Marcus Mariota (lock) vs. Athan Kaliakmanis | Mariota sharp; Kaliakmanis 3rd string |
| TE2/TE3 | Ben Sinnott, Chig Okonkwo, Colson Yankoff (Bates hurt) | All getting heavy reps |
| Player | Position | Issue | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| John Bates | TE | Hamstring strain | Out 2+ weeks |
| Nick Allegretti | C | Calf strain | Out ~1 week |
| Tress Way | P | Biceps | PUP, re-eval soon |
| Trey Amos | CB | Fibula fracture (old) + soft tissue | PUP, returning soon |
| Dorance Armstrong | DE | ACL tear (2025) | PUP, "super close" |
| K’Lavon Chaisson | LB | Recovery day | Day-to-day |
| Amik Robertson | CB | Recovery day | Day-to-day |
| Sam Cosmi | RG | Recovery day | Returned Aug 5 |
| Laremy Tunsil | LT | Recovery day | Returned Aug 5 |
Important: No "planned vet rest days" this year (unlike 2025). Quinn gives recovery days as needed based on practice intensity.
The 2026 NFL regular season kicks off Thursday, September 10. The Commanders’ first game date/time will be announced with the full schedule release (usually May).
53 players on the active roster by late August (after final preseason game). Plus 16 practice squad spots.
Physically Unable to Perform. Players can practice but not play in games. They can be activated anytime before Week 1. If still on PUP at roster cutdown, they miss at least 4 games.
Close games often come down to FGs. A reliable kicker = 3–4 extra wins over a season. Stevens has range (56 yards in camp); Moody has NFL experience but inconsistency.
Select practices are open to fans (usually weekends). Check Commanders.com for schedule, tickets, and parking info. No pads = lighter contact; padded practices = more intense.
