Commanders 2026 Camp: Hidden Gems, QB Battle & Roster Shocks

Washington Commanders 2026 Training Camp: Everything You Need to Know (So Far)

TL;DR: The Commanders are in Ashburn, Virginia for training camp. Quarterback Jayden Daniels looks sharp after an injury-plagued 2025. Rookie linebacker Sonny Styles is turning heads. There’s a kicking competition, some injuries to monitor, and the team might add another receiver.

What Is Training Camp Anyway?

Think of training camp like pre-season practice on steroids. All 32 NFL teams gather in late July/early August to:

  • Install new plays and schemes
  • Evaluate who makes the final 53-man roster
  • Build chemistry and conditioning
  • Hold position battles (starter vs. backup)

The Commanders’ camp runs until the first preseason game week (starting August 13). Reporter John Keim is on the ground daily. Here’s the day-by-day breakdown.

Daily Camp Updates

Wednesday, August 5 — Daniels & Mariota Both Shine

Jayden Daniels (starting QB) continued his strong camp:

  • Red-zone magic: Escaped pressure, rolled right, hit rookie Jaylin Lane for a TD
  • Tight-window throw: Found Luke McCaffrey in the back of the end zone despite tight coverage from cornerback Mike Sainristil
  • Commanding the offense: Directing receivers on alignment ("splits"), reminding the center of snap counts — signs he’s fully comfortable in the new system

Marcus Mariota (backup QB) also had a great day, especially in the red zone:

  • Fooled the defense with a pump fake, then hit Nick Nash for a score

Why this matters: Daniels missed most of 2025 with injuries. Seeing him sharp, mobile, and in command is the #1 good news story for Washington.

Running back Rachaad White (Daniels’ college teammate at Arizona State) had high praise:

"He’s the best quarterback I played with… the way he moves, the poise. I’ve seen him come through in the clutch so many times."

Other notes:

  • Sam Cosmi (RG) & Laremy Tunsil (LT) returned from rest days
  • K’Lavon Chaisson (LB) & Amik Robertson (CB) sat out (recovery days after two intense 2-hour padded practices)
  • Sonny Styles (rookie LB) delivered a massive hit on RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt in a goal-line drill — defense celebrated like they won the Super Bowl
  • Terry McLaurin beat Mike Sainristil in 1-on-1s; Sainristil held him, but McLaurin caught it anyway
  • OC David Blough runs a trick play every practice — one worked for a TD Wednesday (media can’t describe it, but expect them in games!)

Tuesday, August 4 — Daniels Reminds Everyone Why He Was Rookie of the Year

Daniels (NFC Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2024) looked crisp all day:

Play Details
Deep out to Terry McLaurin Thrown in rhythm, beautiful completion
Scramble right → throw back middle to Ben Sinnott (TE) Kept eyes downfield, didn’t force it into danger
Post route to Jaylin Lane Perfect ball; Lane leapt early and dropped it (not on Daniels)
Down the seam to Luke McCaffrey Threaded it between corner & safety — "tight window" throw

TE Chig Okonkwo summed it up: "You just gotta be where you’re supposed to be and he’ll find you with the accurate ball."

Kicker Battle Update:

  • Drew Stevens (undrafted rookie): 5/5 FGs (33–56 yards)
  • Jake Moody (incumbent): 3/5 — missed from 49 & 56 yards, plus a 48-yarder in a team drill
  • Stevens is pushing hard for the job

Injury/Rest Notes:

  • Cosmi & Tunsil — rest days (Tunsil after Monday’s 2-hr padded practice)
  • Dyami Brown (WR) — 2 nice catches, including a contested grab
  • Fabian Moreau (CB) — practiced after signing Monday (returning to DC; was a 2017 3rd-round pick here)

Monday, August 3 — Pads Come On, Sonny Styles Announces Himself

First day in full pads. First play from scrimmage: Sonny Styles (1st-round rookie LB) stuffed Jacory Croskey-Merritt in the hole. No live tackling, but the pop was real.

Styles’ early camp resume:

  • Length + speed stand out
  • Solid in zone coverage (broke up a pass to Jaylin Lane)
  • Won a blitz rep vs. RB Jeremy McNichols using speed & power
  • Working alongside veteran LB Frankie Luvu

Other Monday highlights:

  • DanielsChig Okonkwo in back of end zone (red zone drill). Okonkwo waited until the last second to reach over CB Ahkello Witherspoon — veteran move
  • Mike Sainristil broke up back-to-back end-zone passes
  • Terry McLaurin made a sideline catch, tapped both feet — crowd roared

Injury Watch:

  • Trey Amos (CB, fractured fibula) & Tress Way (P, biceps) — on PUP list, re-evaluated Thursday, optimism on both

Saturday, August 1 — Injuries Hit Tight End & Center

John Bates (TE, elite blocker) — strained hamstring, out "a couple weeks"

  • Depth: Chig Okonkwo, Ben Sinnott, Colson Yankoff

Nick Allegretti (projected starting C) — strained calf, out "a week or so"

  • Backup Julian Good-Jones: 2 career snaps
  • 3rd option: Rookie 6th-rounder Matt Gulbin
  • Brandon Coleman (versatile OL, started at LT & LG) & Tyler Cooper (1st-year G) took practice snaps at center — "the more you can do" philosophy

Good news: Treylon Burks (WR) returned from foot issue

Kicker Drill (Late-Game Simulation):

  • Unit sprints onto field after a play, lines up for FG
  • Moody: 3/3 | Stevens: 2/3 (missed 46-ydr)
  • Earlier drill: Moody 6/6, Stevens missed 1

Ben Sinnott (TE): Mixed day — 2 drops (one on a perfect Daniels dime), but multiple catches

Daniels’ checkdown game: Elite. Gets through progressions fast so RBs (like Croskey-Merritt) have room to run after the catch.

Styles again: Broke up a zone pass with long arms; would’ve delivered a big hit if live.

Thursday, July 30 — Tight Ends Are Everywhere

Chig Okonkwo (new signing) lines up everywhere — outside, slot, inline. Terry McLaurin: "He runs routes like a big receiver."

Ben Sinnott (2024 2nd-rounder): "It’s not even close [to previous years]. So many variations. We’re lining up at #1 receiver, running 5-step ins, corners, options, flats. It’s a breath of fresh air."

All TEs running a much wider route tree than 2023–24.

Other notes:

  • Rasul Douglas (CB, signed post-minicamp) ended practice with an INT of Mariota in the end zone. Signed specifically for turnover ability — 21 career INTs. Washington had only 10 takeaways in 2025 (2nd-fewest in NFL).
  • Julian Good-Jones at C for injured Allegretti (coach Quinn: not long-term)
  • Odafe Oweh (LB) — speed flashing, multiple "sack" reps in practice
  • Colson Yankoff (TE) — catch of the day: high-jumped in traffic for a TD from 3rd-string QB Athan Kaliakmanis, held on despite hard landing

Wednesday, July 29 — Day 1: Red Zone & Competition Tone

Coach Dan Quinn opened with red-zone team drills + 2-point conversions"Those are the moments I want."

Red zone context:

  • Offense 2025: 4th in success rate, but 20th in attempts (didn’t get there enough)
  • Defense 2025: 6th in attempts allowed, 31st in success rate (bleeding TDs)

Daniels mixed bag: Perfect corner TD to Treylon Burks, high grab over middle by Burks, but nearly picked by Mike Sainristil in tight coverage.

Daniels on the intensity: "It gets the juices flowing, it gets guys ready."

Other observations:

  • Rasul Douglas: "Turnovers. That’s what I do."
  • Terry McLaurin staying after practice to mentor young WRs Jaden Bradley (rookie) & Jacoby Jones (2nd year) — covering them, teaching coverage beats
  • Dorance Armstrong (DE, tore ACL Week 6 2025) — "super close" to return, started camp on PUP
  • Nick Allegretti left early (undisclosed); battling Good-Jones for starting C job

Tuesday, July 28 — The Receiver Market & Aiyuk Drama

Washington wants another WR. Brandon Aiyuk (49ers) has been linked — played with Daniels at Arizona State, publicly wants to join.

But: Aiyuk’s recent social media activity has multiple team sources saying Washington may lose interest if/when he’s released.

GM Adam Peters on social media factor: "We look at everything… tape, locker room reputation. It’s not usually a huge part. Usually."

Alternative: Stefon Diggs (free agent) — led Patriots with 85 catches, 1,013 yards in 2025. Drawing multi-team interest.

Other notes:

  • Tress Way (P, longest-tenured Commander since 2015) — pec injury, signed veteran Matt Haack
  • Trey Amos (CB, fibula fracture Nov 2025) — had "soft-tissue issues" this offseason, PUP as precaution, should return soon

Key Position Battles to Watch

Position Contenders Status
Placekicker Jake Moody vs. Drew Stevens Stevens winning early (accuracy from distance)
Center Nick Allegretti vs. Julian Good-Jones Allegretti hurt; Coleman/Cooper cross-training
Left Guard Brandon Coleman vs. Chris Paul Coleman getting C reps too = versatility edge
WR5/WR6 Dyami Brown, Treylon Burks, Jaylin Lane, Luke McCaffrey, Jaden Bradley, Jacoby Jones Deep group; special teams will decide
Backup QB Marcus Mariota (lock) vs. Athan Kaliakmanis Mariota sharp; Kaliakmanis 3rd string
TE2/TE3 Ben Sinnott, Chig Okonkwo, Colson Yankoff (Bates hurt) All getting heavy reps

Injury Tracker (As of Aug 5)

Player Position Issue Status
John Bates TE Hamstring strain Out 2+ weeks
Nick Allegretti C Calf strain Out ~1 week
Tress Way P Biceps PUP, re-eval soon
Trey Amos CB Fibula fracture (old) + soft tissue PUP, returning soon

FAQ

1. When does the regular season start?

The 2026 NFL regular season kicks off Thursday, September 10. The Commanders’ first game date/time will be announced with the full schedule release (usually May).

2. How many players make the final roster?

53 players on the active roster by late August (after final preseason game). Plus 16 practice squad spots.

3. What’s the "PUP" list?

Physically Unable to Perform. Players can practice but not play in games. They can be activated anytime before Week 1. If still on PUP at roster cutdown, they miss at least 4 games.

4. Why does the kicker competition matter?

Close games often come down to FGs. A reliable kicker = 3–4 extra wins over a season. Stevens has range (56 yards in camp); Moody has NFL experience but inconsistency.

5. Can I watch training camp?

Select practices are open to fans (usually weekends). Check Commanders.com for schedule, tickets, and parking info. No pads = lighter contact; padded practices = more intense.
