Imagine it’s the last day of summer camp, and you can swap snacks with your friends one final time before the big tournament. That’s basically the MLB trade deadline! Every July 31st, baseball teams make their last trades of the season. Teams fighting for the playoffs try to get better players. Teams out of the race trade away their stars for young prospects (future stars). It’s chaotic, exciting, and sometimes totally baffling.
IMPORTANT POINT: This year, every team in playoff contention made at least one move — except the Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles, who waved the white flag and traded their best players away.
What’s a "rental"? It’s when a team trades for a superstar who becomes a free agent after the season — like borrowing a video game for two months.
The History: David Cone started this trend in 1992 (Mets → Blue Jays → World Series win) and 1995 (Blue Jays → Yankees → playoffs). Since then, here are the top 5 pitcher rentals:
| Year | Pitcher | From → To | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1998 | Randy Johnson | Mariners → Astros | 10-1 record, lost in playoffs |
| 2008 | CC Sabathia | Cleveland → Brewers | 11-2, 1.65 ERA, lost in playoffs |
| 2010 | Cliff Lee | Mariners → Rangers | 4-6 regular season, 3 playoff wins, lost World Series |
| 2014 | Jon Lester | Red Sox → Athletics | 6-4, 2.35 ERA, lost wild-card game in 12 innings |
| 2021 | Max Scherzer | Nationals → Dodgers | 7-0, 1.98 ERA, got tired, lost in NLCS |
CALLOUT: Zero World Series titles among these five aces. Add David Price (2015), Zack Greinke (2012), and Johnny Cueto (2015) — that’s 0-for-7 (or 1-for-8 if you count Cueto’s Royals winning it all). Rentals rarely bring rings.
2026 Winner: Tarik Skubal (two-time Cy Young winner) goes to the Dodgers. Will he break the curse? Stay tuned.
Who’s Philippe Petit? A guy who walked a tightrope between the Twin Towers in 1974. Breslow just did the baseball equivalent.
The Situation: Red Sox were in 3rd place, 5 games back, with only ~11% chance to win the division.
The Moves (All In!):
The Cost: Since last offseason, Boston has traded away 8 pitchers (Early, Kyle Harrison, Shane Drohan, Hunter Dobbins, Richard Fitts, Luis Perales, Anthony Eyanson, Kyson Witherspoon).
Breslow’s Logic: "We have a chance to win now. Worry about later… later." Classic former-player mentality.
CALLOUT: High risk, high reward. If they win the World Series, Breslow’s a genius. If not? The farm system is empty.
Who’s Sam Presti? The NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder GM — a master of 3D chess. He makes his team better while hurting rivals (e.g., trading a player to a team that owns a rival’s draft pick).
What Harris Did: Traded Tarik Skubal (their ACE) to the Dodgers while only 2.5 games out of a wild card spot with 50 games left. Also traded Casey Mize (better ERA than Skubal!) to the Padres.
Harris’s Explanation: "This group isn’t good enough. Best for the organization to rebuild."
The Contrast: Presti strengthens OKC and weakens enemies. Harris strengthened the Dodgers (the team everyone wants to beat) and waved goodbye to 2026.
CALLOUT: The Tigers got good prospects (Zyhir Hope, River Ryan), but nobody in MLB plays 3D chess like Presti.
Last Year: Traded top prospect Leo De Vries for reliever Mason Miller → Made playoffs, lost in wild card.
This Year: Team got hot, kept Miller, and doubled down:
Preller’s Quote: "We’re trying to win championships. We don’t apologize for it."
The Result: A playoff rotation of Michael King, Mize, Ray, Walker Buehler + Mason Miller’s scary bullpen. They can’t out-slug the Dodgers, but they might out-pitch them in low-scoring October games.
The Needs: Aaron Judge & Cody Bellinger injured → needed power & righty bats.
The Gets:
Cashman’s Take: "Boone has better matchups now."
The Problem: Yankees fans wanted a catcher (like Yogi Berra or Thurman Munson would walk through that door). 17 years since a World Series makes fans cranky.
The Move: Acquired Luis Arraez (batting champ, only wants to play 2B) from Giants.
| The Domino Effect: | Player | Old Position | New Position | Experience There |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bryson Stott | 2B (Gold Glove!) | 3B | 15 MLB innings | |
| Alec Bohm | 3B | 1B | 136 games (okay) | |
| Bryce Harper | 1B | Right Field | Last regular OF: 2021 (ranked 96/100 in defense) |
The Result: Phillies already ranked LAST in defense. Now they’re worse at 2B and the outfield. Cue the circus music.
CALLOUT: Harper texted the GM: "I’ll play outfield." Sweet gesture. But 5 years older + never been good out there = adventure time.
The Move: Got Taylor Ward from Baltimore (needed offense).
The Puzzle: Three left fielders, one right field spot:
Advice to Julio Rodríguez: When in doubt, YOU go get the ball.
Last Year: One inch from World Series title.
This Year’s Mix:
The Plan: 2027 Rotation Dreams → Dylan Cease, Trey Yesavage, Soriano, Cody Ponce, Spencer Arrighetti, José Berríos.
Verdict: Creative. Competitive for 2026, building for 2027. Offense needs help this winter.
Last Year’s Deadline (The Fire Sale): Traded Jhoan Durán, Carlos Correa, Griffin Jax, Louis Varland, Harrison Bader, Willi Castro, Ty France… basically everyone except Harmon Killebrew’s ghost.
This Year: Actually added players!
The Twist: They could’ve traded Joe Ryan, Ryan Jeffers, Trevor Larnach for prospects. They said no.
Frustration: Bullpen was terrible all year — fixed in July instead of January. Maybe they’d be leading the division if they’d addressed it earlier.
The Haul (Best in Division):
Verdict: Excellent day. Put this trophy next to the 1948 World Series one.
2021 Magic (Alex Anthopoulos): Jorge Soler, Joc Pederson, Eddie Rosario, Adam Duvall → World Series title (Rosario = NLCS MVP, Soler = WS MVP).
2026 Reality: Tyler Mahle, Brent Suter, Lane Thomas, Bailey Falter, Duncan Davitt, Tyler Uberstine.
Why So Quiet?
The Hole: No true #2 starter behind Chris Sale. Playoffs are short; you need two aces.
The Fire Sale (Bullpen Edition):
The Keepers (Making $161.8M combined, -4.9 WAR):
Add Juan Soto & Francisco Lindor ($257M total) → Still negative WAR.
Also Gone: Mets fans’ will to live.
BOTTOM LINE: The 2026 deadline was wild, weird, and historic. Only October will tell who actually played chess — and who played checkers.
A: A player in the final year of their contract. The team trading for them "rents" them for the rest of the season (and playoffs), but the player can leave for free in the offseason. It’s like borrowing a friend’s bike for the summer — you enjoy it, but you don’t own it.
A: Their GM Scott Harris looked at the first 112 games and decided: "This group isn’t good enough to win a championship." He chose long-term building (getting prospects) over short-term hoping (maybe sneaking into the wild card). It’s a "reset" button.
A: Prospects are young players in the minor leagues who might become stars. Teams hoard them because they’re cheap (rookie contracts) and controllable for 6+ years. Trading them is like spending your savings — sometimes you get a star, sometimes you get nothing.
A: They acquired Luis Arraez, who only plays second base. To fit Arraez in, they had to shuffle everyone: Stott → 3B, Bohm → 1B, Harper → OF. Harper hasn’t played outfield regularly since 2021 and was bad at it then. It’s a desperate offensive upgrade that hurts defense badly.
A: Absolutely. Baseball playoffs are short series (best-of-5, then best-of-7). Hot streaks, cold streaks, injuries, and luck matter more than regular-season talent. The 2021 Dodgers had Max Scherzer (rental) and lost in the NLCS. Talent helps, but October is a different sport.
