The Minnesota Twins are bringing up one of their best young players! Shortstop Kaelen Culpepper will join the big league team on Friday for a weekend series against the Milwaukee Brewers. Even though the MLB trade deadline has passed, this is like making a brand-new addition to the roster—except the player was already in the organization.
IMPORTANT POINT
Culpepper is the Twins’ No. 2 prospect and was recently ranked the No. 53 overall prospect in all of baseball by The Athletic‘s Keith Law. This is a major move for a team trying to make the playoffs.
Think of Culpepper as a 23-year-old rookie with a lot of buzz. Here’s the quick scouting report:
Culpepper’s path to the majors hit a speed bump this summer:
| Date | What Happened |
|---|---|
| June 13 | Suffered a glute strain (muscle in the rear/hip area) |
| Late June | Came back for just 2 games, then went back on the Injured List |
| July 24 | Fully reactivated and returned to Triple-A |
| Since July 24 | 12-for-45 (.267) with 7-for-17 (.412) in his last 4 games (3 doubles, 1 triple) |
IMPORTANT POINT
The Twins actually considered promoting him in early June before the injury happened. They clearly like what they see.
Last year, scouts worried about Culpepper’s defense at shortstop. He made spectacular plays but botched routine ones. That’s like a quarterback throwing a 60-yard touchdown but fumbling the snap on the next play.
This year? Totally different story.
The takeaway: He put in the work, got thousands of practice reps, and turned a weakness into a strength.
The Twins are fighting for a playoff spot in the American League, but their offense has gone cold:
The hope: Culpepper provides offense AND defense—a "two-way" spark the lineup desperately needs.
GM Jeremy Zoll (June): "From the moment we drafted Kaelen, he’s gone out and he’s been a strong performer… He understands he can keep getting better."
GM Jeremy Zoll (now): "He wants to do everything he can to be the best player he can be, not just coast along and get to the big leagues just to say he did."
Translation: This kid has the mindset of a future star, not just a guy happy to be here.
He was on track for a June call-up but suffered a glute strain on June 13. The team wanted him healthy and rolling before throwing him into the fire.
It’s a pull or tear in the glute muscles (your butt/hip area). For a baseball player, it affects running, swinging, and fielding. He’s fully healed now—evidenced by his recent hot streak (7-for-17).
There are ~200+ top prospects ranked league-wide. Top 100 = future everyday player. Top 50 = potential All-Star. No. 53 puts him in "future star" territory.
Almost certainly staying. The Twins didn’t call him up for a "cup of coffee" (brief stint). They need production now for a playoff run, and he’s out of minor league options soon anyway.
Growing pains are normal. Even great rookies struggle against MLB pitching initially. Success = solid defense, competitive at-bats, a few extra-base hits, and not looking overwhelmed. The Twins think he’s ready.
