What is the Leagues Cup?
Think of it like a "World Cup" but just for teams from Major League Soccer (MLS) in the USA/Canada and Liga MX in Mexico. They play against each other to see which league is better!
This isn’t just any regular game. These two teams met recently in a much bigger tournament called the Concacaf Champions Cup (the championship for all of North America).
Why This Matters
LAFC wants revenge. Toluca wants to prove they’re still the kings. It’s the perfect sports drama!
BMO Stadium is LAFC’s castle – and they almost never lose there in Leagues Cup:
LAFC’s supporters’ group, "The 3252," creates such an amazing atmosphere that even when Mexican teams bring thousands of fans, LAFC players still feel like they’re at home.
ELI5: How Leagues Cup Points Work
- Win in 90 minutes = 3 points
- Tie after 90 minutes = 1 point each
- PLUS: Winner of penalty shootout gets 1 EXTRA point
- So LAFC got 2 points total from the Chivas game!
| Player | Why They’re Special |
|---|---|
| Denis Bouanga | Tied with Lionel Messi for most Leagues Cup goals ever (14!) |
| Son Heung-Min | Global superstar, MLS All-Star Game MVP |
Since the World Cup break (5 games):
| Player | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Paulinho | INJURED | Best player in last Champions Cup, out for Phase One |
| Federico Viñas | Playing | New Uruguayan star, scored vs Seattle |
| Helinho | Playing | Brazilian winger, 2 assists in Liga MX |
| Jesús Gallardo | Playing | Mexican international, scored vs Seattle |
| Team | Points | Games Played | Games Left |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toluca | 3 | 1 | 2 |
| LAFC | 2 | 1 | 2 |
The Goal: Top 4 from each league advance to Quarterfinals
Math Time!
With 2 games left, a win (3 points) would put LAFC in great shape. A tie + shootout win (2 points) works too. Even a tie (1 point) keeps them alive. But a loss makes it very hard!
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Revenge game: Toluca crushed LAFC 5-2 in Champions Cup semis
- Home dominance: LAFC has NEVER lost a Leagues Cup home game (7-0-4)
- Star power: Bouanga = Messi in Leagues Cup scoring (14 goals each)
- Teen hero: 18-year-old Jude Terry won Wednesday’s shootout
- Toluca missing Paulinho (their best striker) but Viñas looks sharp
- Both teams have 2 games left – this match HUGE for qualification
- Crowd factor: The 3252 makes BMO Stadium feel like home even vs Mexican teams
Saturday’s match is must-watch soccer! LAFC hosts Toluca in a rematch of the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinals where Toluca staged an incredible comeback.
LAFC arrives confident: unbeaten since the World Cup break, playing at their fortress (BMO Stadium), with the Bouanga-Son duo tearing up defenses. Toluca arrives dangerous: dominating Seattle 3-0, missing their star Paulinho but getting goals from everywhere.
With only 4 teams from each league advancing, every point matters. LAFC has 2 points, Toluca has 3. A win here could practically guarantee a Quarterfinal spot.
Grab some snacks, wear your Black & Gold, and enjoy the show!
They go straight to a penalty shootout (no overtime). Winner gets 2 points total (1 for tie + 1 bonus), loser gets 1 point.
