Stream 7 Must-Watch Shows: From Little House on the Prairie to Trying

Awesome TV Shows to Watch This Week: A Super Simple Guide

Welcome! This is a friendly list of new TV shows you can watch at home. We’ll explain each one like you’re five years old.

How to use this guide:

  1. Read about each show below.
  2. See which app (like Netflix) it is on.
  3. Check the date it starts.
  4. Sit down and watch with your family!

Pick of the Week: Little House on the Prairie

This is our favorite pick! It is based on old books by Laura Ingalls Wilder about farm life in America long ago.

  • What it’s about: A girl named Laura (played by Alice Halsey) and her family move to Kansas to build a new home. They think they can just take land, cut trees, and build. But it’s not so easy! They meet wolves, odd neighbors, and Native American people.
  • What it feels like: The show is mostly safe and sweet (wholesome), but some parts are a bit more real and rough than you might guess.
  • Where to watch: Netflix
  • When: Starting Thursday 9 July

Important Point: Making this show was risky! Many people love the books, and they will be upset if the show is bad. So the makers tried hard to be careful.

Trying

A funny show about a family that is a little messy but full of love.

  • What it’s about: Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) already have kids they adopted (that means the kids are not born from them but are their family). They are not trying to make babies anymore. Now a birth mom named Kat comes to visit, and Nikki worries the kids might like Kat better because she is more relaxed (but less responsible).
  • Why it’s good: It shows what modern families really look like, with warmth and feelings. It has lasted five seasons!
  • Where to watch: Apple TV
  • When: From Wednesday 8 July

Summer ’36

A mystery story with a lesson about rich and poor people.

  • What it’s about: In 1936 France, regular workers got paid holidays (time off with money!) for the first time. Rich folks didn’t like sharing their fancy beaches and hotels. Then a lawyer is killed, and four women from different lives work together to solve it.
  • Heads up: The English voices sound a bit clumsy because they were added later (dubbed).
  • Where to watch: Netflix
  • When: Out now (you can watch today)

Callout: This show has "class conflict" – that’s a fancy way of saying people from different money backgrounds don’t get along.

Sparks of Tomorrow

A cartoon-style story from a famous Japanese drawing studio (Kyoto Animation).

  • What it’s about: Two brothers, Kihachi and Seiroku, live long ago (early 1900s) and love electricity inventions. Seiroku goes to war and takes their book of inventions, but never comes back. Kihachi tries to find the book, with a love story and a bad company that wants the ideas.
  • Where to watch: Netflix
  • When: From Sunday 5 July

A real-life ocean adventure about big weird sharks.

  • What it’s about: Bertie Gregory (a filmmaker) goes to the Pacific ocean near Mexico to meet hammerhead sharks. These sharks are almost gone from the world (extinction). He looks at plans to protect them and finds a huge group!
  • Why watch: The videos are amazing, and the message is clear: we must save nature.
  • Where to watch: Disney+
  • When: From Sunday 5 July

I’m Not Afraid

A kids-as-heroes show from Mexico, a bit like Stranger Things but more everyday.

  • What it’s about: A 10-year-old boy Miguel finds a kidnapped child while looking for his lost soccer ball. He gets his friends to help on their bikes, but they get into grown-up danger.
  • Where to watch: Netflix
  • When: From Wednesday 8 July

Shifting Gears

A cozy family comedy that feels like shows from long ago.

  • What it’s about: In season 2, Tim Allen plays Matt, a dad who has a new girlfriend and acts like a teenager. His daughter Riley (Kat Dennings) has to keep him in line.
  • Feel: Simple lessons about getting along, with a laugh track (recorded laughs).
  • Where to watch: Disney+
  • When: From Wednesday 8 July
