1This past weekend in Syracuse, New York (that’s in Central New York!), the weather was like a perfect summer storybook:
Our weather is like a switch that’s about to flip. Over the next few days, the sun will get super strong, the air will get really hot, and it will feel sticky and wet (that’s high humidity!).
Important Point: This sticky, hot mix can be a little dangerous for some people if they stay outside too long on a few days this week.
You can look at the hourly planner picture (a schedule of your weather) from now through Monday evening to see what’s coming.
We are keeping a close eye on the hot and sticky air. Here is when it will show up:
After Wednesday, the sticky heat will start to go down little by little, and by the end of the week, it will feel much better.
On Sunday, the rest of the country had some hot highs (you can see this in the national map picture). But remember: we already had super hot days on July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Good news! This week’s heat won’t be as crazy extreme as it was a couple of weeks ago.
There are also special "Future Feels Like" maps for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday that show just how toasty it will feel outside.
Imagine a big, heavy invisible blanket of air (scientists call this "high pressure") sitting on top of us all weekend. That blanket is still there! But now, it’s bringing in extra wetness (moisture) along with the heat.
Here’s the tricky part: when the air is wet, our sweat can’t float away into the air as easily. Usually, when sweat goes away, it cools our skin down — like when you blow on a wet spoon. But now, because the air is already full of water, our bodies can’t cool off as well as they did over the weekend.
When it gets this hot, we need to listen to our bodies.
Important Callout: Always know what to look for if you or a friend start feeling sick from the heat. Two big scary things are "heat exhaustion" (when your body gets super tired from the heat) and "heat stroke" (when your body overheats badly). Look at the symptom picture so you know the warning signs!
If you’re headed to the beach on Monday, listen up: you need sunscreen, sunscreen, and more sunscreen!
Numbered Steps for Sunscreen:
Do you or someone you know have a pool? Lucky you! The next three days will be perfect for jumping in and cooling off. Enjoy it!
The weekend was perfect for boating — no rain, no storms, no wild winds, and the water was calm.
Once we get past Tuesday and Wednesday, a "cool front" (think of it like a push of fresh, cooler air) will blow through. It will lower the hot temperatures and sticky air for the second half of the week and even into next weekend!
As always, keep checking the weather on TV, on the CNY Central website, and on their social media pages for any changes.
Final Thought: Be smart about the intense heat, and you’ll be just okay. Have a good start to the week!
To wrap it up simply:
1. Will this week be the hottest ever recorded?
Nope! We had hotter days on July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. This week is hot, but not as extreme as a couple weeks ago.
2. Why does humidity make me feel hotter?
Humidity is just wet air. When the air is already full of water, your sweat can’t evaporate (float away) to cool your skin. So your body stays warmed up!
3. Do I really need to reapply sunscreen at the beach?
Yes! The sun’s burn power (UV index) is very high on Monday. One coat won’t last. Put more on every couple of hours.
4. Is it okay to go boating this week?
Monday is fine, but Tuesday is not recommended for Oneida Lake, Finger Lakes, or Lake Ontario. Wait for calmer days!
5. How can I save money on my electric bill right now?
Sunday night is cool! Turn off the AC and open your windows to let the nice breeze in instead of using machines.
