1In Syracuse and around Central New York, we just had a really nice summer weekend. Think of it like this: the weather was a friendly visitor who brought:
Our weather pattern will switch over the next few days. The same sun will still be there, but now it will be super strong, the air will get hot, and it will feel sticky (high humidity).
Important Callout: On a few days this week, it could be a bit dangerous for some people (like grandparents, little kids, or anyone who gets sick easily) to stay outside too long. Be careful!
Here is a look at the hourly planner from now through Monday evening (picture below).
We are watching for intense heat and rising sticky air (humidity) during these times:
Below is a map of the high temperatures seen across the country on Sunday:

We already had some very hot days on July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. But good news: this week’s heat won’t be as extreme as it was a couple weeks ago.
It’s always smart to remember how to stay safe when it’s hot and how heat can mess with our bodies.
Be sure to know what signs to look for if you or a friend start to feel sick from the heat. Two big words to know:
WHAT SYMPTOMS TO LOOK OUT FOR THIS WEEK
Important Reminder: Learn the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If someone feels dizzy, very hot, or sick, get them to a cool place and ask a grown-up for help.
The reason is a bit like a lid on a pot. The same area of high pressure (think of it as a heavy invisible lid in the sky) has been sitting over us all weekend. Now, that lid is letting in more moisture (water in the air) along with the heat.
When the air is already full of water, our sweat can’t evaporate (turn into invisible vapor) as easily. Normally, sweat evaporating is like our body’s natural air conditioner. If it can’t evaporate, our body temperature can’t cool down as well as it did over the weekend.
The "feels like" number is what your body feels when heat and humidity team up. Here are the future maps for 4 PM each day:

FUTURE FEELS LIKE TEMPS 4 PM TUESDAY

If you go to the beach on Monday, the sun’s UV rays (the invisible rays that burn skin) will be very high. That means:
Do you have a pool? Lucky you! The next three days look perfect to jump in and cool off. Enjoy!
The weekend was great for boating – no rain, no storms, no strong winds, and calm water. Monday will be one more nice day, but:

MOW OR NO FORECAST NEXT FEW DAYS
Sunday night will be a lot like Saturday night – comfortably cool for sleeping. If you turned off the air conditioner and opened windows last night, you can do it again tonight. This helps save a little money on electricity!
After Tuesday and Wednesday, a cool front (like a breeze from a colder place) will push the hot and sticky air away. The second half of the week and next weekend should feel much nicer.
Always check the forecast on TV, online, and on CNY Central social media pages for the latest updates.
Key Point: Be smart about the intense heat and you’ll be okay. Have a good start to the week!
1. What does "humidity" mean in kid words?
Humidity is just how much water vapor (invisible water) is hanging out in the air. High humidity makes the air feel sticky and thick.
2. Why is it dangerous when it’s hot AND humid?
Because our bodies cool off by sweating, but the sweat needs to turn into vapor and float away. If the air already has lots of water, the sweat just stays on our skin, and we can overheat.
3. What are heat exhaustion and heat stroke?
Heat exhaustion is when you feel very weak, sweaty, and sick from too much heat. Heat stroke is worse – your body gets too hot and may stop working right; it’s an emergency.
4. When will the hot weather go away?
After Wednesday, a cool front comes and lowers both temperature and humidity for the rest of the week and next weekend.
5. How can I protect my skin at the beach on Monday?
Use plenty of sunscreen, put it on before going out, and reapply every two hours – don’t rely on just one morning application.
