Imagine you and your friends are at work, and someone writes a funny question on the breakroom whiteboard. That’s exactly what happened last week in the Cincinnati visitors’ clubhouse (that’s just the away team’s locker room) for the Philadelphia Phillies!
An unknown team member wrote: Should Marsh wear a grill on the All-Star Game red carpet? Yes/No. (A "grill" is a shiny, jewelry-like mouthpiece some people wear to look cool).
By a count of tally marks, the team voted a big YES. But don’t expect to see it happen—it was just some playful teasing before Brandon Marsh’s big moment. Marsh is a Phillies outfielder (a player who catches balls way out in the grass) who just earned his first career All-Star selection (a special game where the best players in the league play together).
His teammate Alec Bohm said of Marsh’s red carpet style: “It’ll be pretty normal. He’s got good style. He’s gonna look good.”
It’s been super fun for the Phillies to watch Marsh this year. But nobody is happier about his rise than his buddies Alec Bohm and Bryson Stott. The three have been tight friends ever since Marsh joined the team from the Angels (a different team) at the 2022 trade deadline (the last day teams can swap players).
Early on, this group—which also included Mickey Moniak, Matt Vierling, and Nick Maton—was nicknamed the “Daycare” by fans. Why? Because they were young and always goofing around after games!
But time flies:
Stott said: “Guys get called up now [from the minor leagues—the training ground for new players], and they ask us the questions, and we’re not the ones really asking questions anymore. But it kind of feels like Marsh was with us during COVID at the alt site [a practice camp], and playing with us in the minor leagues. Just from the first day he came over, it was like he’s been here forever.”
This year feels special, but not because Marsh suddenly got better at baseball. If you look at his numbers (called "stats"), you’ll see he’s been hitting like a superstar since May 2025, after he climbed out of a rough slump (a period of playing badly) at the start of that season.
To put his skills in simple terms:
His friends aren’t surprised by those numbers. What is new is that people outside the team are finally noticing!
Suddenly, Marsh is one of the most recognizable faces of the 2026 Phillies. Bohm said: “I think out of all the people I’ve played with, nobody deserves the — not that he’s out here playing for attention — but nobody deserves the recognition that he’s gotten more.”
Callout: Big Baseball News!
The 96th MLB All-Star Game is coming to Philadelphia! Baseball’s biggest stars will play at Citizens Bank Park on July 14. You can follow all the local coverage to keep up with the action.
All this fame doesn’t change Marsh. Stott says the outside noise makes no difference to him: “You can ask him what’s going on in world news, and he has no idea. So I doubt he cares if people are talking about him or not.”
Both Bohm and Stott agree Marsh cares way more about his teammates winning than about his own glory.
Here’s a perfect example of his team-first attitude:
Marsh simply said: “Tonight just wasn’t my night. It was Sosa’s night.” Bohm said this moment sums up exactly who Marsh is as a person: “He’s one of the best teammates I’ve ever had.”
A huge part of Marsh’s steady success since May 2025 is his mindset (how he thinks). He tries to stay calm and consistent every single day. He doesn’t get too happy when he wins or too sad when he loses. He learned this trick from his teammate, Kyle Schwarber.
This season, Marsh finally silenced the chatter about whether he could hit left-handed pitching. He is now an "everyday player" (someone who plays almost every game).
Stott noticed this: “You couldn’t tell if he was in the lineup or really out of the lineup, just based off what his everyday routine was. You couldn’t tell. He’s doing the same thing, and just does it over and over and over, and it’s just who he is.”
Bohm often stands in the on-deck circle (the waiting area for the next batter) right behind Marsh. He hasn’t seen any big changes to Marsh’s swinging style. He’s just impressed by Marsh’s "two-strike approach" (when a batter has two strikes against them—meaning two bad swings—they get careful to avoid striking out).
Bohm always knew Marsh had this magic: “He’s always been a really good player. I remember playing against him in the Fall League [a special league for up-and-coming players], and I’m thinking, this dude could hit. He’s a good player.”
Now, the rest of the baseball world is seeing it too.
Brandon Marsh went from being a fun-loving part of the Phillies’ young "Daycare" crew to a national All-Star sensation. Even with all the cameras, commercials, and fan votes, he remains a chill, team-first player who quietly puts in the work every day. His close friends, Bohm and Stott, aren’t surprised by his success—they always knew he was a great player and an even better teammate. Now, the whole baseball world gets to see what Phillies fans already knew!
1. What is the MLB All-Star Game?
It is a special annual baseball game where the very best players from the National and American Leagues play on the same teams against each other. It’s like a showcase of the sport’s biggest stars!
2. What do "batting average" and "OPS" mean in simple terms?
Batting average tells you how often a player gets a hit when they bat (like getting a hit 3 out of 10 times). OPS is a combined number that looks at how well a player gets on base and how much power they have when hitting. Higher numbers in both mean the player is really good!
3. Why was Brandon Marsh’s friend group called the "Daycare"?
When Marsh first joined the Phillies in 2022, he and his young friends (like Bohm, Stott, Moniak, Vierling, and Maton) were known for being silly and playful after games. Fans jokingly called them the "Daycare" because they acted like a group of energetic kids!
4. What is a "pinch-hitter" in baseball?
A pinch-hitter is a substitute player who comes into the game just to bat for someone else. In Marsh’s case, his manager sent in Edmundo Sosa to pinch-hit for him, and Sosa ended up hitting a winning home run!
