What Is El Niño Anyway?

Imagine the Pacific Ocean is like a giant bathtub. Normally, strong winds push warm water toward Asia, leaving the Americas with cooler water. El Niño happens when those winds relax or reverse, letting warm water slosh back toward the Americas. This warm water heats the air above it, which changes weather patterns all around the world.
