Google Play Users Win $20M Payout: Are You Eligible?

Google Pays $20 Million to North Carolina Users in App Store Lawsuit Settlement

What Happened?

Imagine you want to buy a game or an app on your Android phone. For years, Google made it really hard to buy it anywhere except their own store—the Google Play Store. They also forced app makers to use Google’s payment system, which charged extra fees.

A group of attorneys general (the top lawyers for each state) said this wasn’t fair. They sued Google in 2021. Now, Google has agreed to pay $700 million total to settle the case—and $20 million of that is going to people in North Carolina.

Who Gets Money?

IMPORTANT: You might be eligible for a payment if all of these are true:

  • You bought apps, games, or made in-app purchases on the Google Play Store
  • You did this between August 2016 and September 2023
  • You live in North Carolina

How Will You Get Paid?

It depends on what accounts you have:

  1. If you have PayPal or Venmo → Money will be sent automatically. You don’t need to do anything!
  2. If you don’t have PayPal or Venmo → You’ll need to file a claim to get your payment.

Keep an eye out: Payments are starting to go out now. Check your email or the settlement website for instructions if you need to file a claim.

What Changes Is Google Making?

As part of the settlement, Google has to change how things work for several years:

Change How Long? What It Means for You
Allow other payment options (not just Google Play Billing) At least 5 years App makers can offer cheaper ways to pay
Tell users about cheaper options At least 5 years You’ll see notices about lower prices elsewhere
Let people download apps outside the Play Store easily At least 7 years You can install apps from other stores or websites without hassle

Why Does This Matter?

  • More choices: You won’t be locked into only the Google Play Store.
  • Lower prices: App developers can use cheaper payment systems, which could mean lower prices for you.
  • Fair competition: Other app stores can actually compete with Google now.

Summary

  • Google settled a lawsuit accusing it of blocking competition in its app store.
  • North Carolina residents get $20 million from the $700 million national settlement.
  • If you bought apps or made in-app purchases on Google Play between August 2016 and September 2023, you may get money.
  • Payments come via PayPal or Venmo automatically—or you file a claim if you don’t use those.
  • Google must allow alternative billing, inform users of cheaper options, and allow outside app downloads for years to come.
