NYC’s Immigrant Neighborhood Map Gets a Fix After Little Italy Was Left Out

What Is This Story About?

Imagine a big puzzle of New York City. The city made a special picture (called a map) that shows where people from different countries settled and kept their own culture — like little villages inside the city. This map was part of a tourism guide for the World Cup (a huge soccer tournament).

The map highlighted 30 areas across the five boroughs (the five big neighborhoods that make up NYC). Some of the places on the map were:

  • Koreatown
  • Little Pakistan
  • Little Yemen
  • Three Chinatowns
  • Little Bangladesh
  • Little Poland
  • More than 20 other vibrant immigrant communities

But one famous spot was missing: Little Italy in Manhattan!

Important: Little Italy was left out, and because NYC is like a giant mixing bowl of cultures (often called a "melting pot"), people got upset very quickly.

Why Were People Upset?

New Yorkers (people who live in the city) were not happy. It wasn’t only about Little Italy.

  • Vito Fossella, the Staten Island Borough President (a local leader) and an Italian American, said the problem was also that the map didn’t mention:
    • Jewish Americans in Brooklyn
    • Sri Lankans on Staten Island
    • And other groups
  • He gave this statement: "Ignorance is not a good ingredient for highlighting the sacrifices of so many who built this City and gave so much." (That means: forgetting these groups is a bad way to honor the people who helped build the city.)

A Bakery Family Speaks Up

Ferrara Bakery in Manhattan’s Little Italy was opened in 1892 by Ernest Lepore’s family.

Ernest Lepore said: "We love celebrating pastry and cookies. And it’s a valid product. And it brings us back to how did they do it years ago." He was a little surprised when Little Italy was not originally included on the city’s "Immigrant Enclave" map (that’s just a fancy name for a map of immigrant neighborhoods).

What Is the Mayor Doing?

The current mayor, Mayor Mamdani, faced a lot of complaints (called backlash). He said he is making adjustments.

On Friday, he announced he would add Little Italy to the map. He also explained more:

  • The map was created in 2023.
  • When his team took it over (inherited it), they added a few extra neighborhoods.
  • It is clearly not a complete list of the more than 200 ethnic communities that live in the city.
  • They will make additional changes later to show more areas.

Callout – Mayor’s Own Words: "When we inherited it, we added a few additional neighborhoods. It’s clearly not an exhaustive list of the more than 200 ethnic communities that call our city home. We are going to be making additional changes in the future to reflect that."

Who Gets the Blame?

The team of Former Mayor Eric Adams said they do not accept blame for the oversight (the mistake of leaving things out). So the previous leaders say it wasn’t their fault.

Tourists Are Glad

Visitors in Little Italy were happy to hear the map will be fixed. A tourist named Gianna Catalanotta, who was with Visiting NYC, said: "I think it’s really cool because, like being Italian, it’s cool to see all like the little shops and like the culture because I can’t go to Italy, it’s pretty hard to get there."

Summary

Let’s recap what happened:

  • Mayor Mamdani said he will add Little Italy and more neighborhoods later because the 2023 map was never meant to list all 200+ ethnic communities.
  • Former Mayor Adams’ team says they aren’t to blame.
  • Tourists are happy about the fix.
  • You can submit your own story ideas to Eyewitness News.
