| Date | Friday, July 31, 2026 |
| Time | 7:10 PM |
| Location | Citi Field, Flushing, NY |
| TV | WPIX |
| Starting Pitchers | Marlins: RHP Janson Junk (4-6, 4.89 ERA) Mets: RHP Kodai Senga (0-7, 8.85 ERA) |
ELI5 Note: ERA (Earned Run Average) is like a "score" for pitchers – lower is better. A 4.89 means the pitcher gives up about 5 runs every 9 innings. An 8.85 is very high – like getting a D- on a test.
ELI5 Note: The "Trade Deadline" (August 3) is like the last day of a swap meet. "Buyers" are teams trying to win NOW – they trade future talent for current stars. "Sellers" are teams building for the future – they trade current stars for young prospects.

Pitcher: Janson Junk
ELI5 Note: FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) = how well HE pitches, ignoring his defense. WHIP = Walks + Hits per Inning Pitched (lower = fewer baserunners). ERA+ = compared to league average (100 = average, 83 = below average).
Mets Hitters vs. Junk (Career):
ELI5 Note: Senga’s having a nightmare year. 47 ERA+ means he’s been about HALF as good as an average pitcher. The Mets probably can’t trade him even if they wanted to – nobody wants that contract with these numbers.
| Marlins Hitters vs. Senga (Career): | Player | Stats | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kyle Stowers | 1-4, HR, BB, 3 K | Only HR allowed | |
| Xavier Edwards | 4-13, 2B, 4 K | Most experience vs him | |
| Graham Pauley | 2-4, 2B, K | ||
| Jakob Marsee | 1-2, 2B, BB | ||
| Others | Mostly 1-2 or 0-5 | Small samples |
IMPORTANT ROSTER CHANGES
- Cionel Pérez (LHP) → 15-day IL (left forearm strain, retro to July 30)
- Called up from Triple-A Syracuse:
- Xzavion Curry (RHP)
- Jonathan Pintaro (RHP)
- They take spots of Pérez + traded A.J. Minter
| Player | Interested Teams |
|---|---|
| Luke Weaver (RHP) | Brewers, Pirates |
| Freddy Peralta (RHP) | Cubs, Rays, Braves, Phillies |
| Peralta was scratched from today’s start ~2 PM – likely traded soon! |
ELI5 Note: OBP (On-Base Percentage) = how often he reaches base. .526 = reaches base over HALF the time. That’s INSANE – like getting on base every other plate appearance!
A: He’s almost certainly getting traded! Teams don’t let pitchers start right before the deadline if a deal is close – injury risk could kill the trade. The ~2 PM scratch is a huge clue.
A: ERA+ compares a pitcher to league average (100). 47 means he’s been 53% WORSE than average. For context: a 150 ERA+ is Cy Young territory. 47 is historically bad for a starter.
A: Practically no. He’s owed ~$45M through 2027 (+ 2028 option) and has a 8.85 ERA. No team takes that risk. Mets’ best hope: he fixes things for NEXT year.
A: He’s been CRUSHING the ball (.491 slugging since July 3) and showing incredible plate discipline. Opponents decided: "We’d rather face the next guy." Smart baseball!
A: Not necessarily! They’ve ALREADY traded Minter. Peralta is likely gone. Winning might just mean they get BETTER prospects for remaining pieces (Bichette, Robert Jr., Weaver) because contenders get desperate.
Let’s Go Mets!
Enjoy the game – and keep an eye on your phone for trade alerts!
