Important: Not everyone reacts the same way to dusty air. Some groups need to be extra careful.
Dr. Frank LoVecchio, an emergency‑room doctor and professor at Arizona State University, says:
“For the average person, it’s not going to be a big deal, but it is a big deal for many people.”
The dust can trigger asthma attacks, put extra strain on the heart, and lead to more emergency‑room visits.
JoAnna Strother from the American Lung Association explains that the dust isn’t just dirt. It can carry hidden hitchhikers:
Even if the air looks “just dusty,” it may be carrying things that make breathing harder.
Despite the haze, some locals still enjoyed the park:
Their stories show that many people keep doing normal activities, but they also take steps to protect themselves.
Dr. LoVecchio gives clear advice for anyone in the high‑risk groups:
Tip: An N‑95 mask fits tightly around the nose and mouth, blocking at least 95% of very small particles. Regular cloth masks don’t work as well for dust.
1. What is Valley Fever?
Valley Fever is an infection caused by breathing in a fungus that lives in the soil of the Southwest. Dust storms can stir up the fungus and spread it through the air.
2. Why is an N‑95 mask better than a cloth mask?
N‑95 masks are tested to filter out at least 95% of tiny particles (as small as 0.3 microns). Cloth masks have larger gaps and don’t block fine dust as effectively.
3. Can healthy adults ignore the dust completely?
Healthy adults usually don’t have serious problems, but they may still feel irritation (cough, sore throat). It’s still a good idea to limit time outside and keep windows closed.
4. How can I protect my kids during a dust storm?
Keep them indoors, run an air purifier if you have one, and make sure they wash their hands and face after being outside. If they have asthma, follow their action plan and keep rescue inhalers handy.
5. Where can I get an N‑95 mask?
Most pharmacies, hardware stores, and online retailers sell N‑95 masks. Look for ones labeled “NIOSH‑approved” to be sure they meet the standard.
