The New York Yankees have a major problem behind home plate this season. With the MLB Trade Deadline fast approaching—Monday, August 3rd at 6:00 PM ET—fans are desperate for a fix. Here’s the situation in simple terms:
Important Point: The Yankees’ catchers have combined for a .183 batting average (that’s less than 2 hits per 10 at-bats), a .549 OPS (on-base plus slugging), and a 55 wRC+ (a stat where 100 is average). That’s third-worst in all of baseball.
In last week’s SB Nation Reacts survey, 74% of Yankees fans said catcher is the team’s greatest need at the deadline. (And yes, there are other holes—but this one’s glaring.)
So this week, the survey asked: Which catcher do you think the Yankees will actually get?
Not who they want—who they will land.
| Player | Team | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Ryan Jeffers | Minnesota Twins | Best all-around option, but maybe not available |
| Hunter Goodman | Colorado Rockies | Big power ("masher"), but Rockies may ask too much |
| Tyler Stephenson | Cincinnati Reds | Solid hitter, more likely to be traded |
Here’s how the votes broke down:
Important Point: Jeffers would’ve been the clear favorite a week ago—but the Twins are suddenly winning (14–9 in July) and their new front office wants to keep fans happy. That means they might buy, not sell—and keep Jeffers.
The "Other" vote (26%) wasn’t just a protest—it came with real names. Here’s what fans suggested:
Important Point: Jonah Heim might be the most realistic "Other" option—available, affordable, and an instant upgrade.
The Twins are the wildcard here.
Most deadline trades for everyday players happen between a seller and a buyer.
Two buyers trading stars? Rare. Hard to pull off.
It’s the last day teams can trade players without them clearing waivers. After August 3rd at 6 PM ET, no more deals for the rest of the season.
Weighted Runs Created Plus. It measures a hitter’s total offensive value, adjusted for ballpark and league. 100 = average. Yankees catchers: 55. That’s really bad.
Buyers add players for a playoff push. Sellers trade away veterans for prospects. If Minnesota buys, they keep Jeffers—he helps them win now.
They could—but none of their catching prospects are ready for everyday MLB at-bats right now. A trade is the fastest fix.
Then they roll with Wells, Escarra, and Sánchez the rest of the way—and hope the bats wake up. (Fans really don’t want this.)
The Yankees have a glaring hole, a passionate fanbase, and a deadline looming. Whether it’s Jeffers, Stephenson, Heim, or a surprise name—expect a move. The only question: Will it be enough?
