Cathay Pacific has been providing complimentary wifi services to First class customers since 2022. “Following successful trials on selected flights, the airline has now extended complimentary wifi to Business class customers on all connected aircraft, and will be further extending it to Cathay Diamond members travelling in all cabins in November this year,” it said.Over 90% of Cathay Pacific’s fleet is already equipped with wifi, including all long-haul aircraft. The airline plans to extend connectivity across its entire fleet by mid-2025, it added.
Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Lavinia Lau said: “At Cathay Pacific, we are committed to investing in and further elevating the experience we provide for our customers. With complimentary wifi now available to customers travelling in First and Business class, and coming soon to our Cathay Diamond members, they can stay connected in the air whether travelling for business or leisure.’’
Customers using Cathay Pacific’s complimentary wifi service can enjoy the same experience as paid wifi, enabling them to check emails, browse the internet, stream audio, use social media and messaging apps, and access cloud storage services and other professional applications. Customers can connect with one device at a time, and can switch between devices at any time during their flight. Customers in all cabins can enjoy complimentary access to all pages on cathaypacific.com and the Cathay Shop during their flight.
Airlines have been offering wifi connectivity on board flights for over a decade now. While most airlines charge for the service, others such as US budget carrier JetBlue, for instance, have been offering it free since 2013, with unlimited data and high-speed connectivity throughout the flight. A number of other international carriers such as Philippines Airlines, Norwegian Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Air New Zealand too offer free wifi, but some put a limit on data, typically offering more data to business and first class passengers. A number of other carriers have linked this service to their loyalty program.
Airlines such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Delta Airlines (and as mentioned above Singapore Airlines) offer the service free for its frequent flyer members. Some of these airlines have certain conditions for wifi usage for economy class passengers, with most of them offering it free only to their business and first class passengers.
