France’s coach Didier Deschamps says star player Kylian Mbappé is "available" to play in the World Cup third-place playoff against England. But Deschamps also says he will make changes to his usual starting team in what is his very last match as France’s boss.
Mbappé has been one of the brightest stars of this World Cup. Even though France is out of the running for the main trophy, he still has a shot at two cool prizes:
He already has a winner’s medal and a runner-up medal from past tournaments.
Important Point: Goals scored in the third-place playoff DO count toward the Golden Boot!
Here is the simple scoreboard for the top scorers:
Even though they are tied on goals, Messi is currently ahead because he has one more assist (a pass that leads directly to a goal). Assists are like helping a friend score!
In his final pre-match press conference (a meeting where coaches answer reporter questions), Deschamps shared his thoughts:
Important Point: Deschamps is ending a long reign as France coach that began in 2012, and this playoff is his final game in charge.
France defender Ibrahima Konaté admitted that playing for third place was not the team’s goal. He agreed with England coach Thomas Tuchel, who said “no one wants” to play this match.
But Konaté added:
Q: What is the third-place playoff?
A: It’s a match between the two teams that lost in the semifinals to decide who finishes third in the World Cup.
Q: What is the Golden Boot?
A: It’s an award for the player who scores the most goals in the tournament. Assists can help break ties.
Q: Why is this match special for Deschamps?
A: It’s his final game as France’s coach after starting in 2012 and winning the World Cup as captain in 1998.
Q: Will Mbappé definitely start the game?
A: No. He is available to play, but Deschamps said he will make changes and substitute some players.
