1Imagine a science competition so cool it sounds like something from a superhero movie – that’s the International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO)! For the very first time, Türkiye is sending a team of brilliant high school students to compete for medals at this prestigious event.
Where: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
When: August 2-9, 2026
Who: A team of talented Turkish high schoolers ready to make history!
These aren’t just any students – they’re the best of the best from across the country:
Important Point: This is Türkiye’s first time competing as a full participant! Last year, they attended as observers to learn the ropes. Now they’re ready to play for keeps!
Think of nuclear science like studying the tiniest building blocks of everything around us – even smaller than LEGO bricks!
| Topic | What It Means (In Kid Language) |
|---|---|
| Atomic Structure | How the tiniest particles are arranged, like a super-tiny solar system |
| Atomic Nucleus | The "core" or "heart" of an atom where all the energy is stored |
| Radiation | Invisible energy waves that travel through space (like sunlight, but different!) |
| Nuclear Fission | Splitting atoms apart to release massive energy |
| Nuclear Fusion | Smashing atoms together to create even MORE energy (like the Sun does!) |
| Environmental Radioactivity | Measuring natural radiation in our world |
| Radiation Safety | How to protect ourselves and others when working with nuclear stuff |
| Radiation Risks | Understanding what can go wrong and how to prevent it |
| Nuclear Applications | Cool ways we use this science in medicine, energy, and more! |
The team didn’t just show up – they trained like science Olympians!
Cool Fact: NÜKEN is part of TENMAK – Turkey’s official nuclear research organization. These students got to train where real nuclear scientists work!
"We prepared very well for this process. We hope to achieve great success in these competitions. We would like to thank our Minister of Energy and Natural Resources for his unwavering support throughout this journey."
"We’re excited to bring home medals and make Türkiye proud at the event, where the country is competing for the first time."
This competition isn’t just about winning medals – it’s about:
A: It’s like the Olympics but for nuclear science! High school students from around the world compete by solving problems, doing experiments, and showing their knowledge about atoms, radiation, and nuclear technology.
A: Last year (2025), Türkiye participated as an observer – meaning they watched and learned but didn’t officially compete. 2026 is the third edition of INSO, and Türkiye decided they were ready to jump in as full competitors!
A: Not typically! They received specialized training beyond their normal curriculum, covering university-level topics like nuclear fission, radiation safety, and nuclear applications. Their school (Bahçeşehir High School for Science and Technology) focuses on advanced STEM education.
A: It’s a real working research facility where professional nuclear scientists conduct experiments. The students got two days of hands-on practical training there – using real equipment and learning from actual experts!
A: Nuclear engineering, medical physics (cancer treatment), clean energy research, radiation safety, scientific research, and even space exploration! Nuclear science is used in medicine, energy, archaeology, agriculture, and more.
These young scientists represent the future of Türkiye’s nuclear expertise. Whether they bring home gold, silver, bronze, or "just" incredible experience – they’ve already made history by being the first Turkish team to officially compete at the International Nuclear Science Olympiad.
Go Team Türkiye!
Let’s cheer them on as they show the world what Turkish students can achieve in the fascinating world of nuclear science!
