Quick Snapshot
Game: Tampa Bay Rays @ Colorado Rockies
Date: Monday, August 3
Time: 8:40 p.m. ET
Where: Coors Field, Denver
TV: RAYS, COLR
Records: Rays 65–46 | Rockies 45–67
The Tampa Bay Rays are hitting the road after a rare stumble at home. They lost two of three games to the Chicago White Sox, and their bats have gone ice cold—scoring just one run in each of their last three games.
On the other side, the Colorado Rockies are riding high after crushing the Kansas City Royals 23–8 in a three-game sweep. But as we’ll see, not all offense is created equal.
Heads Up: Odds change often. Always double-check before placing a bet.

| Team | Pitcher | Record | ERA | Quick Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rays | Ian Seymour (LHP) | 7–3 | 4.37 | Used an "opener" in last 2 outings → 2 runs in 10.2 IP. Last true start: 3 runs in 3 IP. |
| Rockies | Michael Lorenzen (RHP) | 3–9 | 6.54 | Last start: 3 ER in 4 IP vs Padres. Start before: 6 ER in 3.2 IP vs Nationals. |
ELI5: What’s an "Opener"?
A reliever starts the game and pitches 1–2 innings, then the "real" starter comes in. It helps matchups and saves the starter’s arm. The Rays do this a lot.ERA = Earned Run Average
Lower is better. It’s the average runs a pitcher gives up per 9 innings. Seymour’s 4.37 is okay. Lorenzen’s 6.54 is rough.
Why this bet?
- Lorenzen has allowed 5+ runs in 6 starts this year → yikes.
- BUT he’s had 5 starts at Coors Field with ≤3 ER, plus 10 more on the road.
- 14 of 22 starts this season: UNDER 3.5 ER.
- Rays offense is scuffling badly (1 run in 3 straight games).
Verdict: Even at hitter-friendly Coors Field, Lorenzen has shown he can limit damage—and the Rays aren’t hitting anyone right now.
The Thinking (from SI Betting’s Walk-Off Wagers column):
Official Pick: UNDER 11.5 (-117)

1. Why is the total only 11.5 at Coors Field? Isn’t it usually higher?
Coors Field is a hitter’s park (thin air = balls fly farther), but oddsmakers know the Rays’ offense is frozen and Lorenzen has had some decent Coors starts. They’re baking in a low-scoring game.
2. What does "serviceable" mean for Lorenzen?
It means "not good, but not a disaster." He’ll give up some runs, but probably not a ton. Think: 3–4 runs in 5 innings. Good enough to keep the game under 11.5 if the Rays don’t hit.
3. Should I bet the Rays moneyline at -174?
Probably not. That’s a heavy price for a team scoring 1 run a game. You’d need them to win ~63% of the time just to break even. Too risky with this offense.
4. What’s the "opener" strategy and why do the Rays use it?
They start a reliever for 1–2 innings to face the top of the order, then bring in Seymour. It hides his weaknesses (he struggles the first time through the lineup) and maximizes his effectiveness. Smart, but unconventional.
5. Are these picks guaranteed?
Absolutely not. Sports betting has no guarantees. Even sharp analysis fails. Bet responsibly, only what you can lose, and never chase losses.
