Finally! United Airlines scraps middle seats for extra space

United Airlines Is Turning the Middle Plane Seat into a Table!

The Big News (as of July 14, 2026)

Imagine you’re on a plane, and the seat in the middle of a row is gone! Instead, there’s a table. That’s what United Airlines announced on July 14, 2026, at 8:02 a.m. ET. They are changing some of their planes so that the yucky middle seat becomes a shared table. This gives the people sitting by the window and by the aisle more room to stretch their arms and elbows.

United says they are the first airline in the United States to do this kind of seat design.

Where Will This Happen?

  • On United’s newest planes called Airbus A321XLR (a type of aircraft).
  • They are getting 50 of these planes.
  • The special table seat will be in a part of the plane called Economy Plus. Think of Economy Plus as the regular coach seats but with a little extra leg space.
  • Only one row on these planes will have the table instead of a middle seat.

How Does the New Seat Work?

  • A table is permanently attached (it stays fixed in place) where the middle seat used to be.
  • The table stretches across the whole middle area of that row.
  • The two people sitting at the window and aisle get extra space for their elbows and can relax more, especially on long trips to other countries.
  • The Economy Plus seats on these new planes already have 3 extra inches of legroom compared to normal Economy seats. So adding the table makes it even roomier.
  • A released photo shows the new design: a table replacing the middle seat for extra space.

Important Point: The middle seat is not just left empty—it is replaced by a fixed table. This is a brand-new idea for U.S. airlines, and it’s only on certain planes in Economy Plus!

What the Airline Boss Said

Andrew Nocella, a big boss at United (his title is Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer), said in a statement:

"We are putting money into making every part of our planes better, from the front to the back, so travelers get more choices and good value. Our newest plane, the XLR, already has fancy beds in our top cabin (called Polaris) that you can step into from the aisle. Now it also has Economy Plus seats with extra leg and arm room. Our customers are going to love these new options."

In simple words: They are improving all seats, and the new plane has both fancy sleeping seats up front and more space in the back.

When Can You Use It? (Timeline)

Here’s when things will happen:

  1. Later this year (2026): The new table-seat option will go on sale. (No price announced yet.)
  2. This fall (2026): The 50 new Airbus A321XLR planes will start flying inside the U.S.
  3. Early 2027: These planes will start flying to other countries.
  4. By 2028: More than half of the 50 planes will be in service.
  5. Where will they go? Some will take over flights from an older plane (Boeing 757) on existing international routes. Others will open brand-new destinations in Europe and South America.

Another Cool Seating Idea: The "Relax Row"

Back in March 2026, United also announced a different fun seat idea:

  • It’s called Relax Row.
  • It will start in 2027 on two other plane types: Boeing 787 and 777.
  • Travelers can buy a whole row of three seats that sits between the normal Economy and a nicer cabin called Premium Plus.
  • With adjustable leg rests, those three seats can turn into a couch so people can lie down or snuggle on long flights.

Summary

United Airlines is rethinking plane seats to make trips comfier. On 50 new Airbus A321XLR planes, one row in Economy Plus will swap the middle seat for a table, giving window and aisle passengers more elbow room. The planes fly domestically this fall, internationally early 2027, and most by 2028. United is the first U.S. carrier with this design. Also coming in 2027 is the Relax Row on other planes, where three seats become a couch. Prices for the table seat aren’t known yet, but sales start later this year.

FAQ

Q1: Why would they remove the middle seat?
A: Because the middle seat is the tightest, least favorite spot. Turning it into a table gives the two other passengers more space to relax, especially on long flights.

Q2: Can I sit in the middle seat then?
A: No, on that special row there is no middle seat at all—just a table. So you can only sit by the window or aisle in that row.

Q3: How much will the new table seat cost?
A: United hasn’t told us the price yet. They said it will go on sale later in 2026, so we’ll learn then.

Q4: Will all United planes get this?
A: No. Only the 50 new Airbus A321XLR planes in the Economy Plus cabin will have the table row. Other planes may get the Relax Row couch seats starting 2027.

Q5: What is Economy Plus?
A: It’s a section on United flights with a bit more legroom than standard Economy, but still not the fanciest cabin. On these new planes, it also gets extra elbow room thanks to the table.
