NEW DELHI: “We are like shadows… We won’t leave you,” thunders US-based gangster Rohit Godara in a recent call with a south Delhi-based builder. A wave of fear appears to have engulfed the business community in Delhi as several entrepreneurs have been the recipients of menacing calls from notorious gangsters demanding protection money.
Two more incidents have emerged, where the callers demanded Rs 5 crore each from the targets, threatening to inflict harm if the sum was not remitted. In the first instance, a real estate developer from Sainik Farms received a call from Rohit Godara, insisting on Rs 5 crore. In another case, a music producer from south Delhi’s Greater Kailash was contacted by Lawrence Bishnoi‘s accomplice, demanding Rs 5 crore.
This comes in the aftermath of a sensational shooting incident that recently left the locality shaken even as armed assailants unleashed a hail of bullets indiscriminately outside a gym in E block of GK-I, eliminating their target — a businessman named Nadir Shah.
Delhi Police‘s Special Cell is investigating the cases. Both calls were made by gangster Rohit Godara, the US-based operative of the gang spearheaded by Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar.
Transcripts of the calls unveil spine-chilling threats. “Corroborate my voice with DSP or SP. Remit Rs 5 crore or face dire repercussions. Affirm payment or we shall dispatch our boys to your residence,” Bishnoi’s aide tells one of the targets.
Godara also cautions that seeking assistance from police will be futile. The other target tells Godara during the call that it was a case of mistaken identity and that he was not an affluent target as Godara presumed. However, Godara seemed certain about the target’s identity.
There has been a surge in extortion-related threats by Lawrence Bishnoi gang of late. In the first week of Sept, a Shahdara-based entrepreneur had lodged an FIR alleging that he received a call from Lawrence Bishnoi gang demanding Rs 10 crore as extortion.
In his complaint, as first reported by TOI on Sept 10, the victim stated that the caller, purporting to be Godara, demanded prompt remittance of the money. He threatened to kill his family if the money was not paid.
In all these cases, Godara appears to be the one making the calls. Godara orchestrated the murder of Karni Sena chief Sukhdev Gogamedi in Rajasthan last year. Godara was last found shuttling between Portugal and Azerbaijan but is suspected to have escaped to the US through the donkey route.
Interpol had issued a red corner notice against Godara in Dec last year following a request from India. Associated with Bishnoi and Goldy Brar gang for a few years, Godara fled the country in June 2022 from Delhi. “On June 13, 2022, Godara is learnt to have fled from Delhi to Dubai on a forged passport issued in the name of one ‘Pawan Kumar’,” said an official.
Originally from Bikaner, Godara turned to crime in 2010 and is wanted in at least 32 cases. He recently demanded extortion of Rs 5 crore and Rs 17 crore from two Rajasthan-based businessmen as well.
Delhi Police has assured the business community that they are taking these threats seriously and working to nab the culprits. City businessmen have been advised to remain vigilant and report incidents immediately.
