Malik Nabers Takes a Big Step Forward

Wide receiver Malik Nabers (wearing jersey #1) participated in team drills on Thursday for the first time since his injury. He wore a red non-contact jersey (this means "don’t hit me!" during practice).

Coach Harbaugh said:

"Everybody was happy that he was out there. It’s a big step to get into team drills. For him to do that was a milestone for our team."

Quarterback Dart added:

"It’s great to have him back. He has a certain presence anytime he touches the field. You could see how excited he was to be out there. He’s running all the way down the field, scoring. Can’t wait for it to be full-go when the time comes."

IMPORTANT POINT: Nabers returning to team drills is a major milestone in his recovery. The team is excited, but he’s still in a non-contact jersey for safety.

Kicker Competition Heats Up: "Must-See FG"

Last year, the Giants used four different kickers. This year, it’s a two-person battle:

  1. Ben Sauls (returning player)
  2. Dominic Zvada (undrafted rookie)

The 62-Yard Moment

Coach Harbaugh (who used to coach special teams) created a pressure situation in Wednesday’s practice:

  • Put 10 minutes on the scoreboard
  • Told the team: "Tied game, play it out like a real scrimmage"
  • After a few punts, Zvada nailed a 62-yard field goal!

Harbaugh’s reaction: "I thought he was going to make it."

Funny side note: Special teams coach Chris Horton told Harbaugh that 42 yards was the "makeable" distance. The kick was from 44 yards (possibly further). Harbaugh joked: "So I had to give him a hard time after that. It was a great kick, great snap, exciting, fun."

What Harbaugh Looks For in a Kicker

Coach’s Checklist:

  1. Big leg (can kick far) — Important
  2. Kicking it straight consistentlyEven MORE important

Harbaugh: "Both those guys have done that very well. Ben has a very good leg too. They’re both having really good camps."

New Snapper and Holder

  • Long Snapper: Ben Mann (undrafted rookie)
  • Punter/Holder: Jordan Stout (All-Pro)
  • This is a brand new "battery" (the snapper-holder-kicker trio)

Odell Beckham Jr. Returns: "Odell Back-ham"

One of the most exciting players in Giants history is back! Odell Beckham Jr. (OBJ) returned to the team that drafted him 12 years ago.

Quick History

  • Last game as a Giant: December 2, 2018
  • Result: 30-27 OT win over Bears at MetLife Stadium
  • Final catch: 1-yard TD from Eli Manning (late 3rd quarter)

Why He Came Back

OBJ shared his conversation with Coach Harbaugh:

"Coach said: ‘I’ve got a good relationship with you, I don’t want you to come here and then something happens and you can’t make the team.’"

OBJ replied: "I can live with giving my best effort and it not working out. I couldn’t live with giving up on myself and never seeing through my dream I’ve been chasing since I was four."

His Mindset Now

"I’m all for competition. I rise to the occasion. Right now I’m just trying to ‘stay in the bag’ — get better each day, know exactly what to do, get open, catch the ball, score, get back to the game I truly love. Grateful for the opportunity."

IMPORTANT POINT: OBJ isn’t guaranteed a roster spot. He’s competing like everyone else, but his motivation is personal — proving to himself he still has it.

Roster Moves: "The Weekly Wire"

Since returning from West Virginia (training camp), the Giants made several defensive back changes:

FAQ

Can I stream the game if I live outside New York?

No. The Giants.com and Giants App streams are in-market only. If you’re outside the NY market, use the Giants Radio Network stations listed above or SiriusXM.

What does the red jersey mean at practice?

A red non-contact jersey means the player is returning from injury. Teammates cannot tackle or hit them — it’s for safety while they rebuild confidence and timing.

Is Odell Beckham Jr. guaranteed to make the team?

No. He’s on a "prove-it" deal. Coach Harbaugh was honest: "I don’t want you to come here and then something happens and you can’t make the team." OBJ accepts this and is competing daily.

Why did the Giants use four kickers last year?

Injuries and inconsistency. That’s why this year’s competition (Sauls vs. Zvada) is so important — they want stability at the position.

When will we know the final 53-man roster?

Sunday, August 30 by 6:00 PM. That’s the NFL deadline for all teams to trim from 90 players (camp roster) to 53 (regular season roster).
