You might know Shaquille O’Neal (called “Shaq” for short) as a giant basketball legend who won the NBA championship four times. But guess what? This fall, he’s returning to places in Texas he knows well — and it’s not to play basketball!
Instead, he’s traveling around Texas as DJ Diesel, which is his fun name for when he’s a DJ (a person who plays and mixes music for crowds). He’ll be playing beat-dropping music at nightclubs in several Texas cities.
The tour was announced on July 14. Shaq said on Instagram: “I usually come to Texas once a year for my festival… but this year we’re mixing it up and doing a full Texas Takeover. See you in September on the road to @shaqsbassallstars.”
Here are the stops on his Texas Takeover:
Important Point: This is a special “Texas Takeover” because Shaq normally only visits once a year for a festival, but now he’s doing a bunch of club shows instead!
San Antonio is a meaningful stop for Shaq. Here’s why:
The club he’s playing at — 1902 — is also a cool spot. It’s inside a historic old train station! It often hosts famous people like:
If you want to see DJ Diesel at 1902 in San Antonio, here’s what you need to know:
Important Point: You must be 18+ and you cannot wear shorts or jerseys to the show!
You might be surprised, but Shaq has been a DJ since he was just 14 years old! His love for it started after he saw a music group called Public Enemy perform live.
He didn’t become famous from DJing first — basketball made him a star. But in 1993, he released a rap album called Shaq Diesel. It sold over a million copies and reached No. 25 on the Billboard 100 music chart. That makes him the only athlete ever to have a “platinum” music album (platinum means it sold a huge amount!). Other athletes like Tony Parker have made music too, but not at that level.
Then in 2014, he performed as DJ Diesel for the first time at the Tomorrow World festival. Since then, he sometimes releases music under the name DJ Diesel.
Shaq (a famous basketball champ) is doing a Texas DJ tour called the Texas Takeover as DJ Diesel. He’ll visit El Paso, San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas in September. San Antonio is special because he lived and went to high school there. Tickets for the San Antonio show at 1902 start at $49.37, the show is 18+, and starts at 10 p.m. Shaq has been a DJ since age 14 and even made a platinum rap album!
