76 Joueurs : Pourquoi le Tournoi « Shogun » Explose les Codes de la Pétanque

The Big Shogun Pétanque Party: A Summer Tournament Tale!

What Happened and When?

Imagine a sunny Saturday in the middle of August. The date? August 15th. The place? A charming little village called Voulaines-les-Templiers. The event? A pétanque tournament organized by the Shogun association!

What is Pétanque?
Think of it like outdoor bowling, but with metal balls! You stand in a circle, toss a tiny wooden target ball (called a cochonnet or "little pig"), and then try to throw your big metal balls as close to it as possible. It’s a beloved French game, perfect for all ages!

Who Came to Play?

Lots of people!

  • 38 teams signed up
  • Each team has 2 players (that’s called a doublette)
  • Total players: 76!

That’s like filling three school buses with pétanque enthusiasts!

Where Did They Play?

Right in the heart of the village at Place du Pâtis — the main square. Picture this:

  • Shady spots under trees to cool off between games
  • A buvette (snack bar) run by the Shogun association with cold drinks
  • Yummy food from "À la Bonne Faim" — Steven and Pauline served sandwiches and ice cream (perfect for a hot August day!)
  • Lights on the courts so the finals could keep going after sunset

The Big Matches: Finals Time!

The tournament lasted all day, full of laughter, friendly competition, and the clink-clink of metal balls.

Consolation Final (for teams knocked out earlier)

Fun Fact: Two Nicos in the finals! One won the main event, the other won the consolation final with his brother Totof. Talk about a Nico sweep!

A tradition! A big basket full of goodies (the panier garni) goes to whoever guesses its weight closest.

FAQ: Your Questions Answered

Question Answer
What is a "doublette"? A team of two players. "Doublette" comes from double — two!
Can anyone join next year? Usually, yes! These village tournaments are open to all — beginners, pros, kids, grandparents. Keep an eye on the Shogun association’s announcements.
What’s "Pétanque à Trou"? A fun variation where you try to roll your ball into a hole instead of just near a target. Think mini-golf meets pétanque!
Why is the hamper called "panier garni"? Panier = basket, garni = filled/stocked. It’s a basket stuffed with yummy local treats — wine, cheese, sausages, cookies… a food lover’s dream!
Do I need my own balls to play? If you’re just trying it for fun, many clubs lend them. But serious players bring their own custom-fitted metal boules!
