Game Recap: Kentucky vs. New Jersey (In Simple Terms)

Think of this like a story with six "chapters" (innings). Here’s how it went:

Chapter 1 (Top of 1st): Kentucky bats first

  • Kentucky gets two runners on base (Avery O’Bryan and Presley Roberts).
  • But they can’t score. New Jersey gets them out. Score: 0-0

Chapter 1 (Bottom of 1st): New Jersey bats

  • New Jersey goes "three up, three down" — meaning three batters, three outs, nobody reaches base. Score: 0-0

Chapter 2 (Top): Kentucky tries again

  • Avary Emmick gets a hit, but gets caught stealing second base.
  • Two quick outs later, inning over. Score: 0-0

Chapter 2 (Bottom): New Jersey scores FIRST!

  1. Analeise Curley flies out.
  2. Aviana Gay hits a slow roller to third base — the fielder fumbles it, throws wildly, and Gay gets all the way to second base.
  3. Jaelyn Brown hits a deep fly ball to center field — Gay runs home and scores! New Jersey 1, Kentucky 0
  4. Briella Bognar doubles, Brown goes to third.
  5. Two outs later, inning ends. Score: New Jersey 1, Kentucky 0

Chapter 3: Both sides go quiet

  • Kentucky: three batters, three outs (ground out, ground out, strikeout).
  • New Jersey: pop fly, strikeout (catcher dropped ball but threw runner out), fly out. Score still 1-0 New Jersey

Chapter 4 (Top): Kentucky TIES the game!

  1. Two quick outs.
  2. Presley Roberts singles.
  3. Paisley Edge hits a double to center field — Roberts scores! Tied 1-1
  4. Next batter flies out. Score: 1-1

Chapter 4 (Bottom): New Jersey has a CRAZY inning

  1. Aviana Gay walks.
  2. Jaelyn Brown bunts, Gay to second, Brown out at first.
  3. Briella Bognar hits to center field — Gay tries to score, thrown out at home! Bognar goes to second.
  4. Kentucky CHALLENGES the call (asks for video replay) — call REVERSED, Bognar out at second (tagged).
  5. Kentucky challenges ANOTHER play at third — Gay safe, call STANDS.
  6. Pitcher Michaela Knight catches a line drive for the third out. Score still 1-1

IMPORTANT POINT: Teams get two unsuccessful video challenges per game. Kentucky used both here — one worked, one didn’t.

Chapter 5 (Top): Kentucky TAKES THE LEAD!

  1. Avary Emmick flies out.
  2. Michaela Knight doubles (hits ball deep).
  3. Jenna Ball singles.
  4. Hailey Warren sacrifice bunts — gives herself up to move runners to 2nd & 3rd.
  5. Evelyn Chelstrom singles to right field — Knight’s courtesy runner scores! Kentucky 2, New Jersey 1
  6. Brinley Bishop pops out. Score: Kentucky 2, New Jersey 1

WHAT’S A COURTESY RUNNER?
Only for the pitcher or catcher when there are two outs. The runner must be the player who made the last out. It lets the pitcher/catcher rest.

Chapter 5 (Bottom): New Jersey can’t answer

  • Fly out, fly out, walk (Sophia Tolentino), strikeout (Leiana Gay). Score: Kentucky 2, New Jersey 1

Chapter 6 (Top): Kentucky adds insurance? Nope.

  • Three quick outs (fly out, ground out, double, pop out). Score stays 2-1

Chapter 6 (Bottom): New Jersey’s LAST CHANCE

  1. Gia Gatto grounds out.
  2. Mischa Koeppen strikes out (Knight’s 6th K!).
  3. Shaelyn Seaman strikes out on three pitches.
    GAME OVER. KENTUCKY WINS 2-1!

    • 10 runs ahead after 4 innings → game over.

2. What If It’s Tied After 6 Innings?

3. Video Replay Challenges

  • Each team gets 2 unsuccessful challenges during regulation.
  • 1 extra challenge for extra innings only.
  • "Unsuccessful" means the call didn’t change — if you’re right, you keep your challenge!

4. Continuous Batting Order (CBO)

  • EVERY player on the roster bats — no substitutions in the lineup.
  • They hit in order, 1 through however many players (usually 12–14), then back to #1.
  • Everyone gets to hit!

5. Courtesy Runner (We Saw This!)

  • Only for pitcher or catcher.
  • Only with two outs.
