Imagine being down 2-0 in a huge tournament game with your back against the wall. That’s exactly where Jamaica’s Under-20 national team (affectionately called the "Young Reggae Boyz") found themselves on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at the Estadio Universitario BUAP in Puebla, Mexico. But instead of giving up, they fought back like champions to earn a courageous 2-2 draw against Panama in the Concacaf U20 Championships Group C.
IMPORTANT POINT: This draw keeps Jamaica’s quarterfinal dreams alive and kicking! They now sit on 4 points in the group standings.
Panama came out desperate after losing 3-0 to Canada just days earlier. They struck twice in the first 22 minutes:
NOTE: It could have been 3-0! A third Panama goal in the 36th minute was ruled out by VAR (Video Assistant Referee).
Down but not out, the Young Reggae Boyz clawed their way back:
| Minute | Scorer | Assist | Type of Goal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 62′ | Jahmarie Nolan | — | Open play |
| 90+ (added time) | Jaquan Brown | Jamione Lyle (freekick) | Header |
Key moment: This was the second game in a row Jamaica scored on the final play of the match in added time! (Brandon Bent did it against Honduras too.)

Coach made ONE change from the Honduras game:
CALL OUT: THREE REASONS TO CELEBRATE
In a nutshell: Jamaica’s U20 team refused to die. After a nightmare first half where Panama raced to a 2-0 lead, the Young Reggae Boyz showed up when it mattered most. Jahmarie Nolan started the comeback in the 62nd minute, and substitute Jamione Lyle delivered a perfect freekick that Jaquan Brown powered home with his head in the dying seconds. The 2-2 draw puts Jamaica in a strong position to reach the quarterfinals, sitting third overall in the entire tournament behind only the traditional giants USA and Mexico. Next up: wait for Canada vs Honduras result, then prepare for the knockout rounds!
Think of it like the "World Cup qualifiers for teenagers" in North/Central America & the Caribbean. The best U20 teams compete, and top finishers earn spots in the FIFA U20 World Cup.
It’s extra minutes the referee adds at the end of each half to make up for time lost to injuries, substitutions, VAR checks, etc. Jamaica has now scored twice in this bonus period!
The hero of the hour! He’s a Jamaican defender who rose highest to head home the equalizer. His celebration photo (at the top of this article) says it all — pure joy!
VAR = Video Assistant Referee. It’s like instant replay in other sports. Officials watching on screens saw something illegal (offside, foul, handball) on Panama’s would-be third goal and correctly canceled it.
The schedule depends on the Canada vs Honduras result. But with 4 points, Jamaica has a great shot at advancing regardless. Stay tuned to Concacaf’s official channels for the knockout round schedule!
