Karabell’s 2026 RB Tiers: The Ultimate Draft Cheat Sheet

Fantasy Football 2026: Running Back Tiers Explained Like You’re 5

What Are Tiers and Why Should You Care?

Imagine you’re at a candy store with $20 to spend. You see:

  • 2 amazing chocolate bars (super expensive)
  • 5 really good gummy packs (medium price)
  • 10 okay lollipops (cheap)

Simple rankings just say: "Chocolate #1, Chocolate #2, Gummy #1, Gummy #2…"
Tier rankings say: "Hey! There are only 2 chocolates total. Once they’re gone, there’s a BIG DROP to gummies. But there are 5 gummies — so you can wait on those!"

IMPORTANT POINT
Tiers show you where the talent drops off. They help you see "peaks and valleys" so you don’t overpay for a player when similar ones are still available.

How to Use This Guide: 3 Simple Steps

  1. Print or save these tiers before your draft
  2. During your pick, check: "How many players are LEFT in the current tier?"
  3. If only 1 running back remains in a tier but 4 wide receivers remain → GRAB THE RUNNING BACK!

The 2026 Running Back Tiers (All 12 Tiers!)

Tier 1: Top of the First Round — The "Unicorns"

Only 2 players. If you pick early (1st-2nd overall), you’re getting one of these.

Rank Player Team
1 Jahmyr Gibbs Detroit Lions
2 Bijan Robinson Atlanta Falcons

Why they’re special: Most experts agree these two stand alone at the top. They’re elite pass-catchers AND rushers.

Tier 2: Mid-to-Late First Round — The "Studs"

5 players. Good enough for Round 1, but there’s a drop after Tier 1.

Rank Player Team Karabell’s Note
3 Jonathan Taylor Indianapolis Colts
4 De’Von Achane Miami Dolphins "Special" — don’t overthink Miami’s situation
5 James Cook III Buffalo Bills Led league in rushing yards! Not just TDs
6 Derrick Henry Baltimore Ravens "Don’t bother looking up his birth year" — he keeps producing
7 Chase Brown Cincinnati Bengals

Tier 3: Early Second Round — The "Volume Warning" Guy

Only 1 player. Christian McCaffrey is amazing but…

Rank Player Team Big Concern
8 Christian McCaffrey San Francisco 49ers 413 touches last year! That’s historically unsafe volume. Karabell avoids him in Round 1.

IMPORTANT POINT
Players coming off massive workloads usually step back statistically. Think about the downside, not just the upside.

Tier 4: Rounds 2/3 — The "Bounce-Back Candidates"

3 players who should be better than last year.

Rank Player Team Why They’re Here
9 Ashton Jeanty Las Vegas Raiders Disappointing rookie year, better setup now
10 Saquon Barkley Philadelphia Eagles Eagles want him as offensive focal point
11 Omarion Hampton Los Angeles Chargers Disappointing rookie, better position to succeed

Tier 5: Rounds 3/4 — The "Proven but Question Marks"

5 players. Most are proven vets. CRITICAL: Try to have 2 RBs before this tier ends!**

Rank Player Team Note
12 Josh Jacobs Green Bay Packers
13 Breece Hall New York Jets
14 Kenneth Walker III Kansas City Chiefs
15 Javonte Williams Dallas Cowboys
16 Jeremiyah Love Arizona Cardinals Rookie — high ankle sprain might hurt September

Tier 6: Rounds 5/6 — The "Touch Concerns" Group

4 players. All have real threats to their workload.

Rank Player Team Concern
17 Kyren Williams Los Angeles Rams Compromised touches threat is real
18 Travis Etienne Jr. New Orleans Saints Might not catch as many passes in new offense
19 Quinshon Judkins Cleveland Browns Returning from ankle surgery, wasn’t a pass-catcher as rookie
20 Cam Skattebo New York Giants Reckless play style = health risk

Tier 7: Rounds 6/7 — The "Older Veterans & Unproven Rookies"

4 players. Mix of aging vets and young unknowns.

Rank Player Team Situation
21 D’Andre Swift Chicago Bears Proven but older, likely timeshare
22 Jadarian Price Seattle Seahawks Rookie, not much pass-catching yet
23 Bhayshul Tuten Jacksonville Jaguars Year 2, not a pass-catcher
24 David Montgomery Houston Texans Proven but older, likely timeshare

Tier 8: Round 7 — The "Timeshare City" Tier

4 players. All in committee backfields.

Rank Player Team Karabell’s Hot Take
25 Rhamondre Stevenson New England Patriots "Quite good — why assume younger Henderson pushes him aside?"
26 TreVeyon Henderson New England Patriots Rookie competing with Stevenson
27 Bucky Irving Tampa Bay Buccaneers Major competition for touches
28 Kenny Gainwell Tampa Bay Buccaneers "Proved he’s quite good!" Karabell prefers Gainwell over Irving a few rounds later

Tier 9: Rounds 10/11/12 — The "Bye-Week Fill-Ins"

6 players. Unlikely to be safe weekly starters. Roster for bye weeks.

Rank Player Team Note
29 Tony Pollard Tennessee Titans Seeking 5th straight 1,000-yard season
30 Jaylen Warren Pittsburgh Steelers Hierarchy unclear
31 Rico Dowdle Pittsburgh Steelers Hierarchy unclear
32 Aaron Jones Sr. Minnesota Vikings Hierarchy unclear
33 Jonathon Brooks Carolina Panthers Hierarchy unclear

37 Kyle Monangai Chicago Bears Younger than starter, doesn’t catch passes
38 Blake Corum Los Angeles Rams Younger than starter, doesn’t catch passes
39 RJ Harvey Denver Broncos Does catch passes!

Tier 11: Rounds 14/15/16 — The "Late-Round Lottery Tickets"

Key Strategy Takeaways

IMPORTANT POINT
These are KARABELL’S tiers. The most critical part: MAKE THEM YOURS.

  • Do mock drafts (ESPN Mock Draft Lobby)
  • Study your way (film, stats, podcasts — whatever works for YOU)
  • Look forward, not backward (last year’s stats ≠ this year’s production)
  • Build tiers based on what YOU believe

IMPORTANT POINT
Don’t leave your draft without 2 running backs!
If you reach the end of Tier 5 (Round 4) with only 1 RB → you’ll regret it later.

Quick Reference: Tier Cheat Sheet

Tier Round Range # of Players Vibe
1 1st 2 Elite unicorns
2 Late 1st 5 Studs
3 Early 2nd 1 Volume warning
4 2/3 3 Bounce-back
5 3/4 5 GET 2 RBS BY HERE
6 5/6 4 Touch concerns
7 6/7 4 Older vets / raw rookies
8 7 4 Timeshares
9 10-12 6 Bye-week fill-ins
10 12-14 5 Deep value
11 14-16 9 Lottery tickets
12 16+ / FA 8 Emergency only

Summary

Tier-based drafting = Smart drafting.
Instead of asking "Who’s ranked #14 vs #15?", ask:

  • "How many RBs are LEFT in this tier?"
  • "Is there a cliff coming up?"
  • "Am I reaching, or is this value?"

Your 2026 RB Draft Checklist:
Print these tiers
Do 3+ mock drafts
Adjust tiers to YOUR beliefs
Target 2 RBs by end of Tier 5 (Round 4)
Don’t overpay for volume-heavy veterans (looking at you, CMC)
Wait on Gainwell over Irving in Patriots/Bucs timeshares
Stash late-round pass-catchers (Spears, Kamara, Harvey)

Now go dominate your draft!

FAQ

What’s the difference between rankings and tiers?

Rankings put every player in a straight line: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5…
Tiers group players by expected production: "These 5 guys are basically the same level." Tiers show you where the drop-offs happen.

Should I follow these tiers exactly?

No! Karabell says it himself: "The decisions are YOURS." Use these as a starting point, then adjust based on your research, league settings, and gut. Do mock drafts to test your own tiers.

Why is Christian McCaffrey so low (Tier 3) when he was amazing last year?

413 touches (rushes + catches) is historically dangerous workload. Players with that volume almost always decline or get hurt the next year. Karabell fears the downside more than he loves the upside.

What’s a "timeshare" and why should I avoid it?

A timeshare = 2+ RBs splitting carries on one team. You never know who gets the goal-line carry or the 3rd-down pass. Unpredictable = bad for fantasy. Tier 8 is FULL of timeshares (Patriots, Bucs).

When should I draft my first running back?

  • Picks 1-2: Tier 1 (Gibbs/Robinson)
  • Picks 3-10: Tier 2 (Taylor through Chase Brown)
  • Late 1st / Early 2nd: Tier 3 (CMC — if you accept the risk) or start Tier 4
  • BY END OF ROUND 4: You must have 2 RBs (end of Tier 5)
