A very sad and serious court case is happening right now. Lindsay Clancy is on trial for first-degree murder in the deaths of her three young children:
The children died in January 2023. The trial is now on its ninth day (a Friday), and more than 50 witnesses have already spoken in court. Starting this Friday, several more witnesses will be called—including Dr. Jennifer Tufts, one of Lindsay’s psychiatrists.
Dr. Tufts is a psychiatrist (a medical doctor who specializes in mental health). Here’s what we know about her:
Her online bio says she has a "particular interest in women’s mental health and perinatal psychiatry from pregnancy through two years postpartum."
That means she focuses on mental health during pregnancy and up to two years after giving birth.
According to court documents, Lindsay Clancy found Dr. Tufts through an online search.
| Date | What Happened |
|---|---|
| Sept. 15, 2022 | First appointment. Lindsay’s Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale score was 23. (The "concern" cutoff is 13; max score is 30.) |
| Mid-October 2022 | Dr. Tufts prescribed Zoloft (an antidepressant). Lindsay started taking it. |
| Late 2022 – Jan 2023 | Lindsay saw other psychiatric clinicians, then returned to Dr. Tufts for follow-up visits in December 2022 and January 2023. |
| Jan 2023 | Tragedy occurs — Lindsay’s three children die. |
Dr. Tufts wrote 12 of the 30 prescriptions Lindsay received in the four months before the killings. Here are the medications:
| Medication | Used For |
|---|---|
| Zoloft | Depression |
| Ativan | Anxiety |
| Benadryl | Sleep (often used off-label) |
| Valium | Anxiety |
| Buspirone | Anxiety |
| Amitriptyline | Strong antidepressant (also used for nerve pain, migraines, sleep) |
Important: It’s not clear how many of these Lindsay took at the same time. Doctors often try different medicines and doses to find what helps — this is common in psychiatry.
Two civil lawsuits were filed earlier this year — one by Lindsay Clancy, one by her ex-husband Patrick Clancy. Both name Dr. Tufts and Aster Mental Health.
Between October 2022 and January 2023, the lawsuits allege that:
Callout: What Is Postpartum Psychosis?
This is a rare but dangerous condition that can happen after giving birth. Symptoms may include confusion, hallucinations, delusions, and rapid mood swings. It’s a medical emergency — but it’s treatable if caught early.
Neither Dr. Tufts nor Aster Mental Health have responded to requests for comment.
On Monday, jurors were shown a bag of prescription bottles that Patrick Clancy gave to police.
This raises questions: How much medication did Lindsay actually take? The bottles suggest she may not have taken many of the pills prescribed.
Callout: This Is Not Unusual
It’s common for psychiatrists to:
- Prescribe multiple medications at once
- Change doses frequently
- Switch medicines if one isn’t working
They’re trying to find the right combination for a very sick patient. The trial will let the public hear why each doctor made their choices.
The trial is moving through many witnesses — over 50 already. Dr. Tufts is one of several medical providers being called to explain their treatment decisions.
It’s a 10-question survey used to screen for postpartum depression. Scores:
That’s a key question in the trial. Some antidepressants can increase agitation or suicidal thoughts in rare cases — especially if someone has undetected bipolar disorder. The lawsuits argue this happened.
We don’t know yet. It could mean:
Dr. Tufts and other doctors will take the stand. They’ll explain:
Their testimony could make or break the case.
