The Old Farmer’s Almanac — a weather guide that’s been around since 1792 — just released its official winter forecast for 2026-2027. The headline for Michigan? Expect a warmer and drier winter compared to last year.

Last winter (2025-26) was brutal. The Midwestern Regional Climate Center labeled it "extreme" for many parts of Michigan. Think heavy snow, bitter cold, and storms that just wouldn’t quit.
This year? The Almanac says El Niño is steering the ship — and that usually means a much gentler winter for the Great Lakes State.
The Almanac doesn’t just guess. It looks at four major natural signals to make its prediction:
ELI5: Imagine the Pacific Ocean is a giant bathtub. Every few years, the water in the middle gets unusually warm. That warm water pushes the jet stream (a fast river of air high up in the sky) farther south. When that happens, Michigan ends up on the "warm and dry" side of the storm track.
