Welcome to your hurricane season dashboard! Think of this page as your mission control for watching storms in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. We’ll break down the maps, the science, and what it all means for you—no meteorology degree required.


What Are We Watching Right Now?

Right now, meteorologists are keeping a close eye on two named storms and a few other suspicious areas that could turn into something:

  • Tropical Storm Moke (Pacific)
  • Hurricane Lala (Pacific)
  • Several "invest" areas (weather speak for "areas we’re investigating") in both basins

Quick Definition: A basin is just a giant ocean neighborhood where tropical storms form. We have the Atlantic Basin (includes Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico) and the Pacific Basin (off the west coast of Americas, stretching to Asia).


Pacific Basin: The Main Stage

The big map at the very top shows a satellite view of the entire Pacific Basin. You can see:

  • Where Moke is right now
  • Where Lala is right now
  • Shaded areas labeled "Possible Development" — these are the "invest" zones

Hurricane Lala: The Strong One

Forecast Cone Map — This shows the probable path of Lala’s center over the next several days.

  • The cone gets wider over time because forecasts get less certain the further out you go.
  • Important: The storm’s impacts (rain, wind, surge) often extend far outside the cone!

Tropical Storm Moke: The Other Player

Forecast Cone Map — Same idea as Lala, but for Moke.

  • Moke is currently a tropical storm (winds 39–73 mph). Could it become a hurricane? The cone helps us watch.

Spaghetti Models for Moke

This map looks like a plate of spaghetti thrown at the wall — each line is a different computer model’s guess of where Moke goes.

  • Tight bundle of lines = models agree = higher confidence.
  • Spaghetti everywhere = models disagree = low confidence, wide range of outcomes.

Sea Surface Temperatures (Pacific)

Why this map matters: Hurricanes are heat engines. They need warm water (at least ~80°F / 27°C) down to about 150 feet deep.

  • Orange/Red = plenty of fuel.
  • Blue/Green = too cool, storms weaken or can’t form.

Pacific Tracks So Far This Season

A "yearbook photo" of every tropical storm and hurricane that has formed in the Pacific so far this year. Helps you see: has it been busy? Quiet? Where do they usually go?


Atlantic Basin: The Other Ocean

Wind Shear: The Storm Killer

Map shows purple areas = high wind shear.

ELI5: Imagine a stack of pancakes. Wind shear is when the bottom pancakes get blown one way and the top pancakes get blown another. The stack falls over.

  • Tropical storms hate this. It tears their thunderstorms apart.
  • Purple = hostile. Storms struggle to form or survive here.

Dry, Dusty Air (Saharan Air Layer)

Map shows brown shading = dry, dusty air from Africa’s Sahara Desert.

  • This air sinks (sinking air = no thunderstorms).
  • No thunderstorms = no tropical storm engine.
  • Brown areas = generally unfavorable for development.

Sea Surface Temperatures (Atlantic)

Same idea as Pacific: warm water = fuel. This map shows where the gas tank is full.

Atlantic Tracks So Far This Season

The "yearbook" for the Atlantic side. Tracks of every system that reached at least tropical storm strength (winds ≥ 39 mph).


How Do We Measure a Whole Season’s Power? Meet ACE.

Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) — sounds fancy, but it’s simple:

ACE = (Storm’s max wind speed)² × (how long it lasts) … summed up for every storm all season.

  • High ACE = lots of strong, long-lived storms.
  • Low ACE = few, weak, or short-lived storms.
  • The chart compares this year’s ACE (so far) to the historical average for each basin.

How to Use This Page (Step-by-Step)

  1. Check the big satellite map — Where are the active storms right now?
  2. Click the forecast cones — See the official National Hurricane Center track for Lala & Moke.
  3. Glance at spaghetti models — Are models agreeing or fighting?
  4. Peek at wind shear & dry air maps — Are there "shields" protecting land, or "open doors" for storms?
  5. Check sea surface temps — Is there rocket fuel ahead of the storm?
  6. Review season-to-date tracks & ACE — Context: is this a crazy year or a normal one?
  7. Bookmark & return daily — Forecasts update every 6 hours (sometimes more).

Important Reminders (Callout Box)

The Cone Is Not The Storm!
The forecast cone only shows where the center might go. Dangerous weather (storm surge, flooding rain, tornadoes, damaging winds) often happens hundreds of miles outside the cone.

Forecasts Change.
Check back at least every 6 hours when a storm threatens land. The cone shifts, models flip, intensity forecasts adjust.
