‘Outer Banks’ Creators Break Down That Season 5 Finale Twist

Outer Banks Season 5 Finale Explained: Creators Reveal All Secrets, Endings & What’s Next

SPOILER ALERT! This article contains major spoilers for Season 5 (the final season) of Netflix’s Outer Banks. If you haven’t finished the series yet, go watch it first!

The Big Picture: How It All Ended

Imagine a story that starts with a huge hurricane… and ends with one too. That’s exactly what Outer Banks did! The creators (Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke) sat down with Deadline to explain everything about the final season.

Full-Circle Moments

  • Hurricane bookends: The series started with a storm in Season 1 and ended with one in Season 5
  • Sarah’s white dress: She wore a version of her iconic Midsummers dress from Season 1 for her real wedding to John B
  • Original vows: They used the same promises from their fake wedding on the boat in Season 2
  • OG Pogues reunion: The original friend group (minus JJ) went on one last treasure hunt together in Azerbaijan

Major Life Events This Season

  • Three proposals! Pope proposed to Cleo twice, Rafe proposed to Sofia
  • One wedding: Sarah and John B finally tied the knot
  • One baby: They named their son JJ after their fallen friend (who was supposed to be the godfather)
  • Happy reunion: Sarah got to see her mom again

The Supernatural Twist: Blackbeard’s Blue Crown

This season got a little spooky! Three different people chased a legendary crown that supposedly could bring dead people back to life:

Character Who They Wanted to Resurrect
Kiara JJ (her boyfriend)
Chandler Groff (JJ’s dad) His wife/Larissa (JJ’s mom, whom he killed)
Finch (rich collector) His young daughter

Important Point: The show never confirmed if the crown actually had magic powers. The creators deliberately walked right up to the line of supernatural but didn’t cross it. When Kiara held the crown during a meteor shower, she saw JJ — but it was explained as her memories of him. The "blue light" was based on a real video of a meteor shower!

Kiara’s Revenge Arc (Kill Bill Style)

After JJ died in the Season 4 finale, Kiara went full action-hero:

  1. First attempt: Groff threw her into the ocean (she survived by "summoning JJ for help")
  2. Second attempt: She hunted Groff down and killed him — this time for real

The Happy Ending: Pogues Win the Gold!

Remember the Royal Merchant gold they found way back when? The bad guys kept stealing it. But in the finale:

  • Groff and Kiara’s boat sank in the hurricane
  • The Pogues recovered the gold from the ocean floor
  • Kiara survived AGAIN — she floated in the calm eye of the storm until rescued (second time cheating death!)

With the gold money, John B said they "rebuilt the island the way it should be so all of us, Kooks and Pogues, could live there… forever."

New Kildare Life

  • Pope & Cleo moved into Tannyhill (Pope’s ancestral home)
  • Topper became a bartender (more on this later!)
  • Most Kooks left — insurance companies won’t let people rebuild after hurricanes anymore

Creator Interview Highlights

The Ending Was Planned From Day One

Shannon Burke: "Many elements of the final sequence, we discussed at the end of Season 1. We knew this is where we were going the whole time."

Planned from the start:

  • Sarah & John B’s wedding
  • Pope getting Tannyhill
  • Bookending with a hurricane

Evolved later:

  • Rafe’s bigger role — they didn’t expect Drew Starkey to be this good!
  • Pope & Cleo’s journey — shaped by what happened to Pope in Season 4

Burning Questions Answered

Where Are Rafe & Sofia?

They didn’t send that postcard from Rio! But:

  • Jonas Pate: "In the credits, you see a video call from Rafe at the wedding."
  • Josh Pate: "Rafe not being arrested for murder — that’s his win. He’s not in jail for life."
  • Shannon Burke: "He’s exiled, but he gets a second chance. As good as it gets for someone who was so bad."
  • Josh Pate: "That is another spinoff possibility."

Did They Consider Killing Another Pogue?

Nope!

  • Jonas Pate: "We never thought of killing anybody else."
  • Josh Pate: "I didn’t want to kill anybody, I don’t want anyone else to die."
  • Kiara almost died twice but survived both times

Was the Azerbaijan Trip Just for the OGs?

Yes, on purpose!

  • Josh Pate: "We’re trying to chime some old vibes, classic OBX vibes."
  • Shannon Burke: "It felt good to have just the OG Pogues on one adventure."
  • Cleo got her own hero moment back in the Bahamas (she blew up Twinkie the van!)

Twinkie the Van: Gone But Not Forgotten

Cleo blew up John B’s beloved VW van "Twinkie" — but it came back!

  • Wedding cake shaped like Twinkie
  • "Just Married" van for their getaway
  • Jonas Pate: "It was a new incarnation… not easy to find. Over the season, there were seven [vans], because they kept breaking down."

The Supernatural Question: Magic or Not?

Josh Pate: "We always knew the show was not a supernatural show but some people believe supernatural things… these kids could believe in these myths without us actually crossing the line into actual magic."

The creators disagree among themselves!

  • Shannon Burke: Not supernatural
  • Jonas Pate: Not supernatural
  • Josh Pate: "It was a meteor shower… two people can see the same thing… one can take it in a supernatural, spiritual way… someone else can just be like, ‘Oh, it’s a lightning bolt.’"

Kiara’s hurricane survival: The eye of the storm passed over her. Josh Pate: "Kara [the actress] thinks JJ helped her."

JJ’s Return? Not in Real Life

  • Shannon Burke: "Not in any corporeal, like not as a real person, but maybe in a dream sequence, sort of as it was."
  • Josh Pate: "We always knew we wanted to show when they first met… it never got very serious" about bringing Rudy Pankow back

The Gold Legal Loophole

How did the Pogues legalize the gold so fast when Rose couldn’t for years?

Shannon Burke (paraphrased): Maritime law! If you find treasure underwater, it’s yours. If it’s on land, different rules apply. Rose had it in a house Ward hadn’t officially bought yet. The Pogues found it in the ocean = maritime treasure = theirs.

Rose’s Fate: No Gold, But Happy?

  • Josh Pate: "I don’t think so [she didn’t get gold]."
  • Shannon Burke: "She’s hooked up with another rich guy on Outer Banks, and she’s okay… everyone’s more or less on good terms."

Groff: The Ultimate Unredeemable Villain

Why was he so evil with zero redemption?

  • Jonas Pate: "We like the good villain."
  • Josh Pate: Based on a real sociopath from the book Blood Will Out — a guy who murdered someone, went to prison, and still lied to his friend’s face: "I didn’t kill him."
  • Shannon Burke: "His original sin is that he married up into Larissa’s family, and then he ends up killing her… he’s gone crazy, so not redeemed in any way, but maybe explicable?"

Topper the Bartender & The Disappearing Kooks

Why is rich-kid Topper pouring drinks?

  • Shannon Burke: "Even wealthy people work as bartenders… to soften him, make him more relatable, like he’s actually learned something."
  • Josh Pate: "He’s been excommunicated from his parents… maybe he got cut off and has to support himself."

Where did the Kooks go?

  • Josh Pate: "The Kooks abandoned the island after the hurricane… you can’t get insurance anymore. They’ll pay you back, but they won’t let you rebuild… the post-hurricane island returns to more a poorer version."

What’s Next? PREQUEL CONFIRMED!

Josh Pate: "It really is the story of how the island split… how it split into the haves and have-nots, how the Kooks and the Pogues started. How did this rift start?"

A prequel series set 20 years earlier (featuring the parents’ generation) is in active development at Netflix!

Also teased: A Rafe & Sofia spinoff possibility!

Creators’ Final Thoughts

Josh Pate: "We feel really a lot of gratitude to being allowed to end the show in the way we wanted to… you rarely get to end on your own terms. So, we feel a lot of gratitude for that."

FAQ: Your Top Questions Answered

1. Did JJ really come back to life?

No. The show never crossed into actual magic. Kiara saw him during a meteor shower (memories) and survived the hurricane (eye of the storm). The actress thinks JJ helped her; the creators leave it open to interpretation.

2. Why didn’t Rafe walk Sarah down the aisle?

He’s a fugitive/exiled. The creators said "not being in prison for murder is his win." He video-called the wedding instead. A spinoff might show what he’s doing now.

3. How did the Pogues get the gold legally so fast?

Maritime law loophole! Treasure found in the ocean = belongs to finders. Rose had it on land in a house that wasn’t legally Ward’s yet. Different rules!

4. Is the prequel definitely happening?

Yes! It’s "in active development at Netflix" — set 20 years ago with the parents’ generation, explaining how the Kook/Pogue divide started.

5. Will there be more Outer Banks after the prequel?

The creators teased another possible spinoff (likely Rafe & Sofia). But the main Pogues’ story is complete — they got their happy ending on their own terms.

Final Thought

Outer Banks gave us something rare: a show that knew its ending from Season 1 and actually got to film it. The Pogues lost for 49 episodes straight — but in the end, they won the gold, saved their home, honored their fallen friend, and built a future where Kooks and Pogues can finally coexist.

Not bad for a bunch of kids from the wrong side of the tracks!
