On Saturday, Austin FC (the Verde & Black) traveled to Commerce City to face the Colorado Rapids. The game was tied until the very last minute of extra time when Rafael Navarro scored a penalty kick to give Colorado a 1-0 win. Tough way to lose!
This is Austin FC’s third time playing in the Leagues Cup:
Thursday’s match is the first of THREE straight home games in Phase One of the tournament. The last time Austin played at Q2 Stadium, they crushed Seattle Sounders 3-1 with late goals from top scorers Myrto Uzuni and Christian Ramirez. They’ll want to bring that same energy!
Tijuana comes in with a 2-1-0 record in Liga MX (2 wins, 1 draw, 0 losses):
| Player | Why They’re Dangerous |
|---|---|
| Mourad El Ghezouani | Moroccan forward who scored TWO goals in extra time in the season opener for a 3-1 win |
| Gilberto Mora | Only 17 years old! Already played for Mexico’s national team at the FIFA World Cup |
This is Tijuana’s 5th Leagues Cup (2019, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026). Since the tournament switched to a group stage format in 2023, they haven’t advanced past the group stage yet. They’re really motivated to change that this year!
KEY THINGS TO REMEMBER
- First-ever meeting between these two clubs!
- Austin wants to bounce back from that last-minute loss to Colorado
- Tijuana is on a hot streak and leading their league
- Three straight home games = huge chance for Austin to rack up points
- Winner gets 3 points in the group standings
Think of it like a big summer tournament where teams from Major League Soccer (USA/Canada) play against teams from Liga MX (Mexico).
