Tom Selleck is famous for playing Thomas Magnum — the charming private investigator in Hawaii who drives a red Ferrari and wears a mustache like a badge of honor. But here’s the surprising part: he almost said "no" to the whole thing.
During a recent chat with his friend and fellow actor Ted Danson on Danson’s podcast "Where Everybody Knows Your Name," Selleck shared the wild story of how one conversation with James Garner saved his career.
In Selleck’s own words: "I’m sitting there, and I’m pretty preoccupied ’cause something had happened… The show, incidentally, was called ‘Magnum’ and I hated it. It was terrible."
James Garner was a Hollywood icon, best known for playing Jim Rockford on The Rockford Files — a flawed, relatable private investigator who made mistakes, got beat up, and struggled to get paid.
Garner’s advice: "You don’t have much power, but if they want you, you’ll never have more power than you do right now. That’s all I’m gonna say."
That short sentence changed everything. Selleck realized he had leverage — the studio wanted him — and he used it.
He didn’t want to be Rockford. But he wanted a character like Rockford — someone with:
Callout: This was a massive risk.
Selleck had done six failed TV pilots before this. He told Charlie Rose in 1997: "Had it not worked out, I think I would have gotten a pretty good reputation for being difficult and never worked again."
Before acting took off, Selleck:
His dad’s philosophy: "Risk is the price you pay for opportunity."
Selleck took the risk — and it paid off.
| Moment | What Happened |
|---|---|
| Original script | Perfect, Bond-like character — Selleck hated it |
| James Garner’s advice | "Use your leverage now — you’ll never have more" |
| Selleck’s stand | Said no, demanded a flawed, human character |
| The rewrite | Donald P. Bellisario delivered a script with heart |
| The title fight | "P.I." added for legal reasons; Selleck refuses to use it |
| The risk | 6 failed pilots, possible career suicide — but he bet on himself |
Bottom line: Tom Selleck almost walked away from his most famous role. One conversation with James Garner reminded him of his power. He fought for a character with flaws and heart — and won. The result? A show that ran for 8 seasons and made him a household name.
The original character was perfect — no flaws, two girlfriends, a Ferrari. Selleck thought it was unrealistic and "terrible," like a cheap James Bond copy.
James Garner played Jim Rockford on The Rockford Files — a messy, relatable PI. He told Selleck to use his leverage before signing, which gave Selleck the courage to say no.
He wanted a character with flaws, heart, and real problems — someone who could fail, get hurt, and struggle, like Rockford.
Studio lawyers feared a lawsuit from Clint Eastwood over his movie Magnum Force. They added "P.I." to avoid legal trouble.
In Hawaii, "P.I." is a derogatory term for Filipino Islanders. Selleck lived there and found it offensive, so he only calls the show "Magnum."
