Two of America’s top tennis stars, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, started their journey at the National Bank Open (a big tennis tournament in Canada) with victories on Wednesday. Both players won, but they each faced very different challenges to get there.
Quick Tournament Fact: The National Bank Open is one of the most important tournaments leading up to the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the year!
Jessica Pegula played Magdalena Frech from Poland. This was the second time in one week they faced each other! Pegula won 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 — almost the exact same score as last week in Washington (where she won 3-6, 6-3, 6-0).
Important Point: Playing the same opponent back-to-back is tricky! You know their game, but they also know yours — and they’ve had a match to adjust.
Coco Gauff beat American qualifier Kayla Day 6-2, 7-5. This was her 7th win against an American in 2026 — she’s now 7-0 against compatriots this year!
Important Point: Gauff wasn’t at 100% physically — and that was on purpose.
| Player | Current Form | Key Challenge | Goal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jessica Pegula | Won 2 matches vs. same player in 2 weeks | Mental focus, quick turnaround | Build momentum |
| Coco Gauff | 7-0 vs. Americans in 2026 | Physical fatigue from training | Survive early rounds, peak later |
Tennis tournaments happen weekly. Both players entered the Washington tournament (Mubadala DC Open) last week and the National Bank Open this week. They both won their first matches, so they met again in the second round.
It means training hard now so your body is at its absolute best during the US Open (late August/early September). Players often feel tired in the tournaments right before a Grand Slam — that’s normal and planned.
A qualifier is a player who had to win extra matches before the main tournament started to earn a spot in the main draw. They’re often ranked lower but can be very dangerous!
You remember what worked (and what didn’t) last time — but so do they. They might change their strategy. You have to stay focused, not assume the same thing will work, and not get frustrated if they adjust.
Both will play their next round matches in the coming days. Winning early rounds builds confidence — and rest days help recovery, especially for Gauff!
