Apple has quietly published a rulebook (a set of rules) for its new ads on Apple Maps. This shows Apple is taking a more carefully chosen approach than Google, the big advertising company.
Apple announced earlier this year that Maps ads are coming. But they have not said the exact day.
Important: Apple has not answered questions from reporters about this new rulebook.
A new policy called the Apple Advertising Services policy was published and is effective as of July 14, 2026. Here are the big rules:
Google lets many home service businesses advertise using something called Local Services Ads, which is one of its biggest local ad types.
Apple’s policy shows it is first limiting ads to places with a physical location that customers actually visit (like a store or restaurant).
Important: This curated (carefully picked) approach could make Apple’s ads feel like normal map listings instead of paid search ads. It may also save Apple trouble, since home services (like locksmiths) often need extra checking. Google allows them but makes businesses do verifications and audits.
Apple said it will do things differently from Google:
This makes Maps feel like a clean navigation tool, not a search engine with lots of ads.
Apple published a rulebook for Apple Maps ads effective July 14, 2026. It bans home services, crypto ATMs, bail bonds, and carefully reviews medical ads. Only one clearly labeled ad will show, with a blue halo, and your ad data stays private on your device. This is a more curated approach than Google and keeps Maps focused on navigation. Ads are expected in the U.S. and Canada this summer.
1. What are Apple Maps ads?
They are promotions for businesses that appear inside Apple’s Maps app when you search.
2. Why can’t plumbers or locksmiths advertise on Apple Maps?
Apple banned home services categories at first to keep ads limited to places people visit and to avoid extra verification headaches.
3. Will my data be safe with Maps ads?
Yes. Apple says data about the ads you interact with stays on your device and is not shared.
4. When can I see these ads?
Apple said “this summer” in the U.S. and Canada, but no exact date was given.
5. How many ads will I see at once?
Apple will show only a single ad in Maps search results.
