Orange Line SHUTDOWN: 11 Days Closed Oak Grove to Back Bay
MBTA Orange Line Shutdown: August 20–30 – Everything You Need to Know

The MBTA has announced an 11-day suspension of Orange Line service between Oak Grove and Back Bay, running from August 20 through August 30. This shutdown was first announced on July 15 and is part of a larger plan to upgrade and modernize the system.
Important: No Orange Line trains will run between Oak Grove and Back Bay during these dates. Plan your trips early!
What Work Is Being Done?
During the shutdown, crews will work around the clock (24/7) to complete major upgrades that can’t be done during normal overnight hours. Here’s what’s happening:
Track Upgrades
- Tufts Medical Center to Haymarket: Replacing rail fasteners, rails, restraining rails, plates, third rail, and insulators
- Haymarket to Assembly truck pad: Replacing ties, rails, and plates, plus tamping (packing ballast under tracks for stability)
Signal System Upgrades
- Moving signal equipment racks from temporary to permanent locations at:
- Wellington
- North Station
- Community College
- Final signal work between Oak Grove and Tufts Medical Center
Bonus "Piggyback" Projects
Since the tracks are already closed, the MBTA is tackling extra maintenance at the same time:
- Operator platform upgrades at Wellington
- MassDOT bridge inspections
- Plumbing and drainage fixes at Sullivan Square bathroom
- Deep cleaning of stations
- Systemwide Radio installations
- Signal interlocking and third rail heating upgrades
Why This Matters: Last year, the MBTA achieved 55 MPH speeds between Oak Grove and Assembly for the first time ever. This work will extend those faster speeds to the Community College to Assembly section!

Why an 11-Day Shutdown? (The Big Picture)
Key Insight: Multi-day closures are the most efficient way to do this work.
| Approach | Problem |
|---|---|
| Overnight only | Not enough time; MBTA doesn’t run 24/7 |
| Single weekends | Extremely inefficient and costly; setup/teardown repeats |
| 11 straight days | Crews work 24/7; multiple contractors coordinate; max productivity |
This is routine, planned maintenance – not an emergency fix. It keeps the system safe, reliable, and ready for future generations.
