1Welcome to your easy-to-read guide on what happened with Major League Baseball closers this past week! Whether you’re new to fantasy baseball or just want a quick update without the confusing stats, you’re in the right place.
After three months on the injured list, Dodgers closer Edwin Díaz returned on Wednesday. He had surgery to remove loose bodies from his right elbow. The best news? His fastball velocity averaged 96.9 mph — right where it should be. He got his first save since April 7 (his 5th of the season), even though he gave up a run.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo announced Paul Sewald will move to lower-leverage situations (meaning: not the 9th inning with the game on the line). Sewald has struggled with home runs (11 allowed this year) and a 5.26 ERA. Brandyn Garcia got the save Wednesday, but expect a committee approach — multiple pitchers sharing the role.
Important: Starting in 2026, NBC and Peacock become the exclusive home of Sunday Night Baseball, plus Opening Day, Labor Day games, the MLB Draft first round, and the entire Wild Card round!
Think of tiers like ranking groups. Tier 1 = the absolute best, most reliable options. Tier 5 = risky, uncertain situations.
These pitchers are dominant, healthy, and secure in their roles.
| Pitcher | Team | Key Stats & Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mason Miller | San Diego Padres | 4 perfect appearances this week (3 saves, 1 win). 28 saves, 0.79 ERA, 0.79 WHIP, 85 K in 45⅔ IP. Trade rumors swirling — if dealt, Jeremiah Estrada could take over. |
| Jhoan Durán | Philadelphia Phillies | Struck out the side vs. Yankees Saturday. Rare rough outing Monday (3 runs, 2nd blown save). Phillies may add a reliever with Brad Keller on 60-day IL. |
| Cade Smith | Cleveland Guardians | MLB-leading 30 saves. Blown save Thursday (inherited runner scored), bounced back Tuesday. 2.52 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 70 K in 50 IP. |
| Louis Varland | Toronto Blue Jays | 3 saves this week. 23 saves, 0.98 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 73 K in 54 IP — one of baseball’s most valuable relievers. |
| Bryan Baker | Tampa Bay Rays | 4 saves this week, 29 total. Rays lead AL East but may bolster bullpen. |
| Josh Hader | Houston Astros | 2 saves this week, 14 since June 3 debut. |
Pro Tip: Miller is the hottest trade target. If you have him, enjoy the ride — but have a backup plan!
Strong closers with minor questions or recent blips.
| Pitcher | Team | Weekly Update |
|---|---|---|
| David Bednar | New York Yankees | 3 scoreless outings, 3 saves. Streak of 22 scoreless apps ended Tuesday (2 runs, still got save #22). Yankees linked to Mason Miller. |
| Aroldis Chapman | Boston Red Sox | 2 saves this week. 9 saves in July, 25 total. 1.77 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 47 K in 35⅔ IP. Rolling! |
| Andrés Muñoz | Seattle Mariners | 13 straight scoreless apps ended Tuesday (1 run, save #19). Mariners also linked to Miller. |
| Raisel Iglesias | Atlanta Braves | Save vs. Padres, blown save vs. Orioles (unearned run), save vs. Mets (#22). Setup man Robert Suarez (elbow) still weeks away. |
| Jacob Latz | Texas Rangers | 1 run in back-to-back games, save vs. Mariners, save vs. Rays (#21). 1.80 ERA, 0.66 WHIP, 51 K in 50 IP. Rangers buying at deadline. |
| Trevor Megill | Milwaukee Brewers | Save vs. Rockies (#17). 2.97 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 49 K in 39⅓ IP. Solid. |
| Edwin Díaz | Los Angeles Dodgers | ACTIVATED WEDNESDAY! First save since April 7 (#5). Gave up run but held on. Velocity 96.9 mph — huge positive sign. |
Good options, but each has a "but…"
| Pitcher | Team | Situation |
|---|---|---|
| Riley O’Brien | St. Louis Cardinals | Missed Sunday (illness). Scoreless inning Wednesday in tie game. |
| Grant Taylor | Chicago White Sox | Used in 7th inning twice recently. Pitched 9th & 10th in extra innings Wednesday. Committee approach — best reliever used in highest leverage, not just 9th inning. |
| Emilio Pagán | Cincinnati Reds | Clean inning, 2 Ks for save #10 vs. Cardinals Friday. |
| Kenley Jansen | Detroit Tigers | Save #12 vs. Royals Friday. Tigers may sell at deadline — Jansen could move to contender (role change risk). |
| Yoendrys Gómez | Minnesota Twins | Save #13 vs. Athletics Saturday. Doing the job. |
| Devin Williams | New York Mets | Struck out side vs. Dodgers (non-save), save #15 vs. Braves Wednesday. |
Saves happen, but don’t count on consistency.
| Pitcher(s) | Team | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Clayton Beeter | Washington Nationals | Back-to-back saves vs. D-backs (#10 total). 3.69 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 33 K in 31⅔ IP. |
| Pete Fairbanks | Miami Marlins | Saves Tue & Wed vs. Phillies (#15 total). |
| Gregory Soto / Mason Montgomery | Pittsburgh Pirates | Montgomery: 2 runs but save #2 vs. Cubs, then scoreless inning for win vs. D-backs. |
| Erik Miller / Kaleb Kilian | San Francisco Giants | Miller: only save (clean, 2 Ks vs. Brewers Mon). Kilian: win Fri, no save since July 4. |
| Jordan Romano | Colorado Rockies | Save #8 (4th with Rockies) vs. Brewers Fri. 1 run, 9 K in 6⅔ IP this month. |
| Jacob Webb / Trent Thornton | Chicago Cubs | Committee. No clear closer. |
Only roster these in very deep leagues or if desperate.
| Pitcher(s) | Team | Why It’s Risky |
|---|---|---|
| Alex Lange | Kansas City Royals | Save this week. 10 saves but 6.00 ERA, 1.50 WHIP in 42 IP. |
| Brandyn Garcia / Juan Morillo | Arizona Diamondbacks | SEWALD DEMOTED. Garcia got save Wed, has best K-rate in pen. Volatile committee — could change daily. |
| Hogan Harris | Athletics | Save this week, but inconsistent. |
| Tyler Wells / Andrew Kittredge | Baltimore Orioles | Unclear hierarchy. |
| Ryan Zeferjahn / Kirby Yates | Los Angeles Angels | Yates is veteran but inconsistent; committee. |
| Term | Simple Meaning |
|---|---|
| Closer | Pitcher who finishes the game, usually the 9th inning, protecting a small lead. |
| Save | Stat for a closer who enters with a lead of 3 runs or fewer and finishes the game without losing the lead. |
| Blown Save | Closer gives up the lead (game ties or opponent takes lead). |
| ERA | Earned Run Average — how many runs a pitcher allows per 9 innings. Lower is better. |
| WHIP | Walks + Hits per Inning Pitched. Lower = fewer baserunners = better. |
| K / Strikeout | Batter swings and misses or doesn’t swing at strike 3. |
| Leverage | How important the game situation is. High leverage = close game, late innings. |
| Committee | No single closer; manager picks best matchup each night. Bad for fantasy saves. |
| IL (Injured List) | Player is hurt and can’t play. 15-day or 60-day. |
A: He won’t pitch in the 9th inning with the game on the line anymore. He’ll pitch earlier (7th/8th inning) or when the score isn’t close. This kills his save chances.
A: Don’t drop him! Even if traded, he’ll likely close for his new team. But add Jeremiah Estrada (Padres) as a handcuff — he’d likely take over in San Diego.
A: A committee means the manager uses different pitchers for saves based on matchups. You never know who gets the save chance — frustrating and unpredictable for fantasy.
A: No. The velocity (96.9 mph) is the real story. One run in his first game in 3 months is normal. He got the save. He’s back.
A: Watch for: blown saves stacking up, manager quotes about "looking at options", velocity drops, or another reliever getting save chances. Sewald had all of these.
