1ELI5 Note: In fantasy baseball, a "closer" is the pitcher who finishes the game when their team is winning. They get a "save" stat, which is super valuable in fantasy leagues. This report tells you who’s doing a great job, who’s struggling, and who might lose their job soon.
How to read tiers: Tier 1 = "Lock them in your lineup." Tier 5 = "Only if you’re desperate or in a very deep league."
| Player | Team | Key Stats / Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mason Miller | San Diego Padres | 28 SV, 0.79 ERA, 85 K in 45.2 IP. Trade candidate! If dealt, Jeremiah Estrada (just off IL) likely closes. |
| Jhoan Durán | Philadelphia Phillies | Blew save Mon (3 runs vs MIA), but still elite. Phillies may add relief help (Brad Keller on 60-day IL). |
| Cade Smith | Cleveland Guardians | MLB-leading 30 saves. 2.52 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 70 K in 50 IP. Blew save Thu, bounced back Tue. |
| Louis Varland | Toronto Blue Jays | 23 SV, 0.98 ERA, 73 K in 54 IP. One of the most valuable relievers in baseball. |
| Bryan Baker | Tampa Bay Rays | 29 SV. Rays lead AL East and may add bullpen depth at deadline. |
| Josh Hader | Houston Astros | 14 saves since June 3 debut. Back to dominant form. |
| Player | Team | Key Stats / Notes |
|---|---|---|
| David Bednar | New York Yankees | 22 SV. 22-game scoreless streak snapped Tue (2 runs, still got save). Yankees linked to Mason Miller. |
| Aroldis Chapman | Boston Red Sox | 9 SV in July, 25 total. 1.77 ERA, 47 K in 35.2 IP. Rolling right now. |
| Andrés Muñoz | Seattle Mariners | 19 SV. 13-game scoreless streak ended Tue (1 run, got save). Mariners also linked to Miller. |
| Raisel Iglesias | Atlanta Braves | 22 SV. Blew save Sun (unearned run), bounced back Wed. Setup man Robert Suarez (elbow) weeks away. |
| Jacob Latz | Texas Rangers | 21 SV, 1.80 ERA, 0.66 WHIP, 51 K in 50 IP. 1 run in back-to-back games, still converted saves. Rangers buyers at deadline. |
| Trevor Megill | Milwaukee Brewers | 17 SV, 2.97 ERA, 49 K in 39.1 IP. Strong, steady season. |
| Edwin Díaz | Los Angeles Dodgers | ACTIVATED WED. 1st save since Apr 7. Gave up 1 run, held on. Velocity back (96.9 mph avg FB). Huge! |
IMPORTANT CALLOUT: Edwin Díaz’s Return
The most important number isn’t the save—it’s 96.9 mph average fastball velocity. That means his elbow surgery worked and he’s throwing like the elite closer he was pre-injury. Add him everywhere immediately.
| Player | Team | Key Stats / Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Riley O’Brien | St. Louis Cardinals | Missed Sun (illness). Returned Wed (scoreless in tie game). |
| Grant Taylor | Chicago White Sox | Used in 7th inning twice recently. Pitched 9th & 10th Wed. Committee approach—best reliever used in highest leverage, not just 9th inning. |
| Emilio Pagán | Cincinnati Reds | 10 SV. Clean inning Fri (2 K). |
| Kenley Jansen | Detroit Tigers | 12 SV. Tigers may sell at deadline—Jansen a trade candidate. |
| Yoendrys Gómez | Minnesota Twins | 13 SV. Doing the job for Twins. |
| Devin Williams | New York Mets | 15 SV, 2.32 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, 55 K in 42.2 IP. Struck out side Sun (non-save), save Wed. |
| Player(s) | Team | Key Stats / Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Clayton Beeter | Washington Nationals | 10 SV, 3.69 ERA. Back-to-back saves vs ARI. |
| Pete Fairbanks | Miami Marlins | 15 SV. Saves Tue & Wed vs PHI. |
| Gregory Soto / Mason Montgomery | Pittsburgh Pirates | Montgomery: 2 SV, gave up 2 runs Sun (held on), scoreless Mon (win). Unclear hierarchy. |
| Erik Miller / Kaleb Kilian | San Francisco Giants | Miller: only save Mon (2 K). Kilian: win Fri, no save since Jul 4. Murky. |
| Jordan Romano | Colorado Rockies | 8 SV (4 with COL). 1 run, 9 K in 6.2 IP this month. |
| Jacob Webb / Trent Thornton | Chicago Cubs | Committee. No clear closer. |
| Player(s) | Team | Key Stats / Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Alex Lange | Kansas City Royals | 10 SV, 6.00 ERA, 1.50 WHIP in 42 IP. Got a save this week, but very risky. |
| Brandyn Garcia / Juan Morillo | Arizona Diamondbacks | SEWALD DEMOTED (5.26 ERA, 11 HR allowed). Garcia got save Wed, has best K-rate in pen. Volatile committee—Garcia best spec add for saves. |
| Hogan Harris | Athletics | Got a save, but unreliable. |
| Tyler Wells / Andrew Kittredge | Baltimore Orioles | Unclear roles. |
| Ryan Zeferjahn / Kirby Yates | Los Angeles Angels | Yates (veteran) and young arm splitting. Unpredictable. |
Q: Should I drop Paul Sewald for Brandyn Garcia?
A: Yes, in most 12+ team leagues. Sewald has lost the job (manager confirmed "lower leverage"). Garcia has the best strikeout rate in the D-backs pen and got the save Wednesday. He’s the best bet for saves there right now, but it’s not a guaranteed role.
Q: Is Mason Miller definitely getting traded?
A: Not "definitely," but there’s "continued speculation." The Padres are sellers. If he goes to a contender (NYY, PHI, SEA, LAD?), he closes. If he goes to a non-contender, he might not get as many save chances. Stash Jeremiah Estrada (SD) as a free insurance policy.
Q: Edwin Díaz gave up a run in his first game back. Should I worry?
A: No. He got the save. The key stat is fastball velocity: 96.9 mph average. That’s his pre-injury elite velocity. The run was a fluke; the velocity is the truth. He’s a must-start.
Q: My league counts holds. Who are the best setup men to target?
A: Adrian Morejon (SD) — if Miller is traded, he closes; if not, he’s an elite hold guy. Robert Suarez (ATL) — returning from IL in a few weeks, will be Iglesias’s primary setup. Jeremiah Estrada (SD) — high K, could close if Miller moves.
Q: What does "committee approach" mean for the White Sox (Grant Taylor)?
A: It means the manager uses his best reliever in the highest-leverage situation, regardless of inning. Taylor might pitch the 7th vs. the heart of the order, or the 9th vs. the bottom. He gets saves sometimes, but not reliably. Hard to trust for fantasy.
