Imagine your favorite cartoon hero leaves the show, then comes back to play for a whole new set of episodes. That’s what’s happening with the TV show NCIS (a police story about solving crimes for the Navy). Actor Michael Weatherly, who plays a funny investigator named Tony DiNozzo, is coming back for many episodes in a row. This long visit is called a "season-long arc" (which just means a story that spreads across the whole new season).
Important Point: His return is for the entire Season 24, not just one episode! And the show will not pretend a recent side-story didn’t happen.
Before actors film a TV episode, they often sit at a table and read the script out loud together. This is called a "table read." On Tuesday, July 14, actress Katrina Law (who is in the show) put a video on her Instagram Stories from the first table read for Season 24. In the video, you can see little name cards on the table for the actors.
The names seen were:
Because Michael’s name card was there with the others, it hints that he will be in the very first episode (called the "premiere"). But we must be careful: sometimes they read more than one script at once, or film scenes out of order. So it’s a strong hint, not a promise.

Michael Weatherly was a main actor on NCIS until the end of Season 13. After that, he came back for a special visit in Season 21, in an episode called “The Stories We Leave Behind.” That episode was a goodbye to the late David McCallum, who played Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard. Tony showed up at the end and shared a scene with McGee (Sean Murray) and Dr. Palmer (Brian Dietzen).
Then in 2025, Michael starred in a separate show on Paramount+ called NCIS: Tony & Ziva (with Cote de Pablo). That show lasted one season and told this story:
Important Point: Michael Weatherly has said his return to the main NCIS show will not retcon (which means "erase or rewrite") the events of that spinoff. So everything that happened in Tony & Ziva still counts as real story.
We don’t know much about why Tony returns to Washington, D.C., except that it lasts the whole season. If he is indeed in the first episode, he might help fix a scary ending from Season 23.
Here’s that ending in simple words:
Tony could be part of solving that mystery.
To sum up: Michael Weatherly (Tony) is coming back to NCIS for the entire 24th season. A peek at a table read suggests he’ll be there from the first episode. His old appearances and the Tony & Ziva spinoff are still part of his story. He may help with a cliffhanger (a tense ending that leaves you guessing) from last season.
