NYC Summer Streets 2026: Manhattan’s Car-Free Celebration Returns
ELI5 Summary: Imagine the biggest, longest block party ever—but instead of just one block, it’s a 10+ mile path through Manhattan where cars are banned and people rule the roads. That’s Summer Streets!
What Is Summer Streets?
Summer Streets is an annual New York City event where the Department of Transportation (DOT) closes major streets to cars and opens them up for:
- Pedestrians (walkers, joggers, families with strollers)
- Cyclists (bikes, scooters, skateboards)
- Free activities (fitness classes, cultural performances, art installations, rest stops with water & shade)
It’s like turning the city into a giant playground for a few hours.
