Important Note: This article covers the first Manhattan weekend (Saturday, August 1, 2026). The event continues on August 8 and August 15 in Manhattan, then moves to Brooklyn and the Bronx on August 22.
What Is Summer Streets? (ELI5 Explanation)
Imagine if the biggest, busiest streets in New York City closed to cars and opened up just for people — people walking, biking, jogging, dancing, and playing. That’s Summer Streets!
Every year, the City of New York picks several weekends in the summer to turn miles of streets into a giant, free playground. No cars. No honking. Just open space for everyone.
This year, it started in Queens and Staten Island last weekend. Now it’s Manhattan’s turn!
