Tigres played a good part of their match against Xolos de Tijuana with one less player. This was because Rodrigo Aguirre was sent off (kicked out of the game) near the end of the first half.
But here is the surprising part:
Here is the step-by-step of what went down:
Important Point: Covering your mouth during an argument with an opponent can now get you instantly sent off under the new rule!
The IFAB (International Football Association Board) is the group that decides the rules for soccer around the world — including the World Cup. For the 2026–2027 season, they added a new expulsion rule:
The official rule says:
"The player, substitute, or substituted player must be expelled if they commit any of the following infractions: (…) covering the mouth when communicating with an opponent in a provocative, contemptuous, or inflamed manner."
This is known as the Ley Vinícius or Ley Prestianni (Vinícius Law or Prestianni Law).
It was created after a racist incident where Gianluca Prestianni targeted Vinícius Jr. during a Champions League match last season.

Tigres had to play with one less player against Xolos because Rodrigo Aguirre covered his mouth during an argument with an opponent. This triggered a new rule from IFAB that was used in the 2026 World Cup and is now in Liga MX. The rule says covering your mouth to talk badly or heatedly to a rival means an automatic red card. It is also called the Ley Vinícius or Ley Prestianni after a past racist incident in the Champions League.
1. What does "sent off" or "red card" mean?
It means the referee shows a red card and the player must leave the field immediately, leaving their team with one fewer player.
2. What is VAR?
VAR stands for Video Assistant Referee. It is a team of refs who watch the game on video and help the main referee review important decisions.
3. Why is it called the Ley Vinícius or Ley Prestianni?
Because the rule was made after Gianluca Prestianni acted in a racist way toward Vinícius Jr. in a Champions League game, and lawmakers wanted to stop similar disrespectful behavior.
4. Does this rule apply to all soccer leagues?
The rule was added by IFAB for the 2026–2027 season and was used in the 2026 World Cup. Liga MX has already started using it, and other leagues are expected to follow.
