Public Safety & Health Guidance

This celebration will be unforgettable, but we want everyone to stay safe — including your pets!

Fireworks will happen as scheduled, rain or shine. Fireworks can be loud and scary for some people and animals. Here’s how to prepare:

Tips for All Guests

  • Stay cool! July in DC is hot and humid. Bring water, take breaks in the shade, and learn the signs of heat exhaustion.
  • Bringing pets? Leave them home. The National Mall is NOT a pet-friendly environment on the 4th of July. The loud noises, big crowds, and unfamiliar surroundings can scare animals and cause them to run away and get lost. For a full pet safety checklist, visit the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Clear Bag Policy

To make security screening faster, everyone must follow the Clear Bag Policy. Each person can bring ONE of the following:

  • Option 1: One clear, see-through bag (maximum size: 12" x 6" x 12" — about the size of a large gallon freezer bag)
  • Option 2: One small clutch or purse (maximum size: 10" x 6" x 2")

All bags will be inspected when you enter.

Important: No Storage On-Site! The U.S. Secret Service does NOT provide storage for bags or items. If you bring something that’s not allowed, it will be thrown away. Check the full policy before you leave home!

Prohibited Items

Certain items are not allowed inside the event. This follows the U.S. Secret Service rules. For the complete and up-to-date list, visit secretservice.gov/prohibiteditems.

Consent Notice: By entering the secured area, you agree to have your person and belongings searched.

Health Recommendations

This will be a historic event, but it comes with some health considerations. The air quality will go down and the noise will be louder than usual. Here’s how to protect yourself:

  • Children, older adults, and people with health conditions are at higher risk and should avoid spending too much time outdoors during this period
  • Download the Air Quality App for the Washington-Baltimore region to get health advisories during and after the event. You can also check EPA’s AirNow webpage for more info
  • Protect your indoor air quality by keeping windows closed, using air purifiers with HEPA filters if you have them, and setting your AC to recirculate indoor air
  • Wear hearing protection during the event — especially for young children
  • Visibility may be reduced during the fireworks. This can affect how people move around, how crowds are managed, and how emergency crews respond

Road Closures & Public Transportation

Road Closures

Expect extensive road closures throughout the National Mall area. On July 4, major bridges will be closed, including:

  • Theodore Roosevelt Bridge
  • Arlington Memorial Bridge

Take public transit! Parking near the Mall is very limited.

Nearest Metro stops:

  • Federal Triangle
  • L’Enfant Plaza
